Here is a time line on the Afghan refugee situation. One of the positive outcomes of the Afghan intervention is the repatriation of millions of refugees. In western Afghanistan there were a huge number of refugees living on the verge of starvation. Iran was not offering assistance nor were the Saudis. Bin Laden didn’t care about them nor did the Taliban. The US and other countries including Canada have helped the refugees, millions of whom were facing certain death, to return to Afghanistan.

This does not excuse the senseless bombing of villages. But it does put the Canadian peace effort into a broader perspective and the efforts of the soldiers should be applauded. Many, many more lives have been saved than have been lost.
