Greeks left skint by Euro

Disaster ... Euro is ruining Greek economy

From MICHAEL LEA
in Brussels

THE euro has wrecked Greek living standards since its introduction in 2002, officials admitted yesterday.

Prices of consumer goods have risen by between 20 and 147 per cent. But wages have gone up only 12 per cent.

The Greek Consumer Research Centre carried out a four-year study.

A spokesman said: “For the average Greek there has been an 85-per-cent average increase in the cost of living.

“In other words, life is about four times more expensive than it was four years ago when the drachma was in use.”

The Greek government is facing widespread labour unrest with wildcat strikes over the sharp drop in living standards.

Neil O’Brien, of the Open Europe think-tank, said the findings should serve as a warning.

He added: “The euro has been an economic disaster, with the poorest hit hardest.

“This is what lies in store if Britain ever dumps the Pound.”
