Bad influence: William has been urged to distance himself from Guy Pelly

Prince William has been urged to drop his party-loving friend Guy Pelly after he allegedly smoked cannabis during a drinking spree with the young royal.

The second in line to the throne has been warned that Pelly - who was accused of introducing Prince Harry to the drug three years ago - is "an accident waiting to happen".

The former agricultural college student was accused of taking the drug at a pub on a night out with the prince and his girlfriend Kate Middleton on Saturday.

William, 23, was enjoying his first weekend off from Sandhurst when he joined Pelly shortly before midnight at the Tunnel House Inn near Cirencester, Gloucestershire.

Future Queen of England? : Kate Middleton, 24.

According to reports, drugs including cocaine, cannabis and ecstasy were being openly sold at the pub within a few feet of the prince. Police are investigating the allegations

Friends of Pelly insist that the incident was "a set-up". His father John, a wealthy landowner, told the Mail: "Guy feels very embarrassed he was caught out in this way.

"As I understand it, he was offered this "cigarette" by an attractive young girl who he had never met before and took a puff of it before he realised he was being set up."

But a police source said: "There is enormous concern about Pelly and the "fast and loose set" that he keeps company with.

"Many in the royal household believe that this young man brings trouble in his wake. It has been made clear to William and Harry that Pelly is a friend they would be better off without."

According to members of their circle, however, both William and Harry are determined to stand by him.

"William feels very strongly that because Guy was - wrongly, in his opinion - accused of introducing Harry to drugs, people have been out to get him for some time," said one source.

Pelly fashions himself as William's "unofficial court jester" and regularly joins him on holiday.

A member of William's circle said: "It's quite pathetic really but William and Harry think he is hilarious. And whatever anyone may say about him, Guy is the soul of discretion.

"He would never rat on them and they appreciate his loyalty."

I don't blame Will (or Harry) ...

Having your every move - visits to the loo - what you ate for lunch - how many hours you spent on a horse.... audited by the berks of the British Press and hysterically recorded for the public interest....would send me straight to weed too. :p

Denouncing the current friends of royalty in an effort to replace them with one’s own cadre of friends and relatives is a British blood sport that is even more ancient than riding to hounds.
