ass Argentine Protest Planned for Bush’s Visit
by Adam Thomson

Anti-US protesters are planning a mass demonstration against President George W. Bush’s visit to Argentina this week for the Summit of the Americas in the seaside resort of Mar del Plata.

Luis D’Elía, who heads one of the country’s so-called piquetero movements – leftwing groups of disaffected unemployed – said the protest would bring together up to 100,000 people and would include popular figures such as Diego Maradona, the former Argentine soccer star.

“The idea is to show the victims of imperialism,” Mr D’Elía told the FT on Monday. “We want to put a stop to Bush’s military build-up and his persistent threats of invasion around the world.”

Family members of fallen US soldiers in Iraq would attend as well as Iraqi civilians who had suffered at the hands of US troops. But he said the centrepiece of Friday’s protests would be a speech by Hugo Chávez, the radical Venezuelan president, scheduled for 1pm on Friday to coincide with the official start of the summit.

Mr D’Elía said the protest would also reject the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA), the ailing trade initiative that diplomats say the US will try to revive during the two-day summit.

“The FTAA would wipe out our industry and exclude 82 per cent of our exports. We have already seen the results of imperialist economic policy, and in Argentina it destroyed our wealth,” he said, referring to the financial chaos that shook the country in December 2001.

The march, together with other protests to mark Mr Bush’s first visit to Argentina and rallies in support of Mr Chávez, have forced local authorities to mount the most intense security operation in the country’s history.

An extra 7,000 police have been deployed on the normally calm streets of Mar del Plata, a 176km no-fly zone has been established with orders to shoot down any unauthorised aircraft, and three concentric circles of imposing metal fencing have been erected around the centre with highly restricted access.

“We have been imprisoned,” said one resident yesterday morning.

Yet Mr D’Elía insisted that despite Argentines’ strong anti-US sentiment – a poll published in yesterday’s Pagina/12, a daily newspaper, suggested that almost 60 per cent of the population rejected Mr Bush’s visit – there would be no violence during Friday’s march.

“The only violent person in Mar del Plata will be Bush himself. He’s the only terrorist around here,” he said.

He added that the march had the support of President Néstor Kirchner’s administration. “A march of that magnitude does not take place without an OK from above.

What is even more amazing is that "they" are too stupid to take a hint. Feedback from all over the world......and they operate as if in some insulated bubble......totally out of touch with reality... , denial etc.

How can they ever offer constructive government.......when they are THIS out of touch ??? How can "they" say they listen to the people.........when the people from not only the US , but all over the world have spoken......and are totally ignored.

dynamic.......if a tad concerning phase in history taking place now.

Firstly, you seem to forget Ocean that the President was democratically elected with a majority vote and with a great majority of the 50 states. If he were running for election now, I'd gladly vote for him again.

Also, in your "feedback from all over the world" comment ... as I've noted earlier, many countires (excluding Canada ... backstabbers) are suporting us (Coalition of the willing) on the global war on terror. The president's persistance against terrorism has successfully prevented further attacks on our soil since the tragic events of 9/11.

Folks realize this and know that the president does not back down from a fight and that is why he would get my and many others vote (if he could run for a third term ... which by law he can't).

He wasn't elected in Argentina, Nero.

First of all the "Coalition of Willing" (coalition of the bribed and bullied is more like it) has nothing to do with the alleged war on terror. It is the few countries that Bush managed to scrape together to help with his illegal invasion of Iraq.

Second of all, many countries, including Canada, France, and Germany, are participating in fighting terrorism around the world. That includes Afghanistan, Nero...You know, where the terrorists had training bases.

Hugo Chavez was democratically elected in Venzuela but that doesn't stop the US from trying to get him overthrown.

Jesus feckin' Christ Nero...do you read anything at all? Do you have the slightest of grasps of the global issues and that your country is involved in virtually anything that can be perceived as negative on this planet...

Wake the feck up, stooge of the Bush administration...your ship is fastly sinking and you may want to consider bailing...

He's just another chicken hawk, Ocean. He's happy to see others die so he can buy cheap gasoline, but he certainly wouldn't put his own ass on the line.
