Dominican Republic:

I would like to start a thread based the Dominican Republic. Many tourists visit the Dominican Republic and come back with glowing reports. They never see the country at large. It is better off than Haiti, but here are many disadvantaged. If you have the wealth it is a beautiful place to live. Haiti and the Dominican Republic share the island of Hispanola. There is a marked colour difference in the people. This is attributed to splitting into two countries in the 1800's. Most Dominicans have African blood to some degree- before turning righteous this fact is in one of their tourist history babbles.

Population 9 million.
25% below the poverty line.

The country suffers from marked income inequality; the poorest half of the population receives less than one-fifth of GNP, while the richest 10% enjoys nearly 40% of national income.
Inflation 55%
Many residents work in the US.

The web is filled with tourist information, that of course, ignores the state of the misery many live under.
