Cindy Sheehan Steps Into the Leadership Void

During my many years as a writer, I've interviewed hundreds of people. But talking with Cindy Sheehan this morning was unlike any conversation I've ever had. Even though we were talking via cell phone -- and had a crummy, staticky connection at that -- her authenticity and passion reached through the receiver and both touched my heart and punched me in the gut.
She spoke with a combination of utter determination, unassailable integrity, fearlessness, and the peace of someone who knows that their cause is just. Her commitment was palpable -- and infectious. It reminded me an old quote about the great Greek orators: "When Pericles spoke, the people said, 'How well he speaks.' But when Demosthenes spoke, they said, 'Let us march!'"
That's the feeling I got from this former Catholic youth minister. She of the floppy hat and the six foot frame (though she's standing even taller than that these days). A woman driven by faith and conviction who used to think that one person couldn't make a difference and is learning otherwise. Her humanity stands in stark contrast to the inhumanity of those who refuse to admit their mistakes and continue to send our young men and women to die in Iraq.
She may not be the kind of media figure the cable news channels would order up from newsmaker central, a la Natalee Holloway. But she is the kind of...

Here is a kid, a hero who fought for his country having his name tarnished my his hypocritical mother.

Yes, hypocritical. This is a woman who is unstable with absolutely no credibility. Last year, when her son died, she praised President Bush for his efforts on the war against terrorism and now all of a sudden she has turned against him. Seems she has caught the flip-flop bug.

Here is what she said after a meeting with the President in June 2004 (about 2 months after the April 2004 death of her son)...

"I now know Bush is sincere about wanting freedom for the Iraqis, I know he's sorry and feels some pain for our loss. And I know he's a man of faith. That was the gift the president gave us, the gift of happiness, of being together."

Also, what Cindy Sheehan fails to understand is her son wasn't drafted to join the army, he voluntarily enlisted because he believed in fighting for his country. No one told him he had to go fight, so what is she complaining about? It was his decision to go!!! President Bush did not tell him to enlist!!!

no where. Do not label "self" , do not categorize self. Prefer a position (if any) of flux....... so as to evaluate each situation, for what it is without pre-set ideas /or trying to make things conform to a set of preset ideas. ( not sure that answers the question...... but the last thing I want is to be "affiliated" with any group/party . Ergo .....at election/voting time......it is a "judgement call" based on what is available .

respect and understand what you are saying, James. What no one seems to have gleaned - I guess no one read the whole article -is that Cindy Sheehan seems to think that her son counts for more than the other soldiers who also died. It's like he is the
CHIEF martyr, and the other soldiers are sub-martyrs. Doesn't seem true or right to me.

and it isn't. Seems you are ASSUMING what she thinks ....and speaking for her. Each parent that lost a child in this atrocity has the same right to protest and join her. IF they don't.....they they are surrendering their kids as sacrificial lambs for the bush invasion.(aka atrocity)......and if that makes them "proud " of their children to die for bush.......who is to condemn them??? It is their choice and belief system.....(based on fanatical patriotism and all that) ......Others take a different view. So, these anonymous signatories belong to Mrs Sheehan's ex-husband's family - the only actual name we have is that of one Cherie Quarterolo, who says she is "Casey's aunt and godmother", and who seems to be quite upset that - and I quote - "We can't walk down the street without people stopping us and telling us that they agree with Cindy."
