China 'seizes US vessel' in S China Sea

The US has issued a formal request to China to deliver an unmanned underwater drone that was seized in international waters, US officials say.

The Chinese navy seized the US underwater research vessel in the South China Sea on Thursday, the US alleges.

The incident took place just as the USNS Bowditch, an oceanographic survey ship, was about to retrieve it.

The device, dubbed an "ocean glider", was used to test water salinity and temperature, officials say.

The data was part of an unclassified programme to map underwater channels, Pentagon spokesman Capt Jeff Davis told reporters.

"It was taken" by China, Capt Davis said during a press briefing on Friday.

"The UUV [unmanned underwater vehicle] was lawfully conducting a military survey in the waters of the South China Sea," he added.

"It's a sovereign immune vessel, clearly marked in English not to be removed from the water - that it was US property."

The encounter occurred in the South China Sea about 50 miles (80km) northwest of Subic Bay, Philippines, the US says.

You spelled Obama wrong. Military drones don't do civilian tasks.

Snagged in international waters but it's path could have had it enter China's waters and that makes it China's property. The only question is was China supposed to find it or not.

What rubbish! It has nothing to do with that. It has to do with cheap US goods flooding the Chinese yuan stores. The Chinese are tired of losing their jobs to cheap US labour.

Hello?

Don't you read CNN?

US oceanographic research vessels are often followed in the water under the assumption they are spying. In this case, however, the drone was simply measuring ocean conditions, the official said.

The seizing of the drone comes on the heels of other provocative incidents that have happened since President-elect Donald Trump received a congratulatory call with Taiwan's President, a violation of the US's agreement with China's "One China policy". China publicly voiced their disapproval of that incident and contacted the White House at the time.

Trump did not. And Taiwan doesn't have telephones. Detroit is losing jobs to mainland China by the hundreds. China is trying to sink all the vessels that are bringing cheap plastic toys and junk from the US.

If you are going to try posting crap like this, at least have your facts straight.

Why do you post ridiculous stuff like this? China doesn't have a navy! Here's a picture of the last seagoing vessels the Chinese had. They were junk.

Typical for you to post utter nonsense in order to further your childish agenda.

This is all Trump's fault.

If he hadn't made that call to Taiwan, this never would've happened.

Expert: Chinese drone seizure a signal to Trump | TheHill

China's seizure of a U.S. Navy underwater drone Thursday is likely a signal to President-elect Donald Trump that it won't take his phone call with Taiwan lightly, an expert said on Friday.

"Knowing Chinese military officials for many years and how orders are communicated from the highest power centers in Beijing down to commanders on the ground or water, this was very likely a highly planned and escalatory move to show China will not take matters lightly when it comes to President-elect Trump’s phone call and comments on Taiwan, or Chinese actions overall," said Harry Kazianis, director of defense studies at the Center for the National Interest.

Trump took a phone call from Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen congratulating him on his presidential win, breaking decades of diplomatic protocol. No U.S. president or president-elect had spoken with a leader of Taiwan since the U.S. normalized relations with China in 1979. China considers Taiwan a breakaway province, not a separate country.
