Dozens of business and labour leaders immediately descended upon Trudeau in a frenzy that is familiar to Canadians. Some, such as International Monetary Fund head Christine Lagarde, simply shook his hand and introduced themselves. But others pulled out their phones for photos with Trudeau, who happily obliged.

The purpose of the event was to discuss ways to ensure everyone benefits from economic growth, not just the already rich. Taking the stage first, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan suggested income inequality was responsible for rampant youth unemployment and the growing threat of terrorism.

Erdogan, who is hosting the G20, encouraged business leaders to spread the wealth, rather than hoarding it for themselves. He told them in Turkish that while they wouldn’t be able to take their money with them when they die, they could be remembered as good bosses who looked out for their employees.

During his own address, Trudeau called on other countries to follow his government’s lead and spend more to spark economic growth for all citizens, even if it meant going into deficit. The Liberals have said they will run multi-billion-dollar deficits over the next three years so they can spend more on infrastructure.
