UN chief calls world to support Harper's $3.5B commitment to kids, moms health

TORONTO - UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is calling on world leaders to follow Canada's $3.5 billion commitment to maternal and child health.

And he says his support is personal.

He is telling delegates to Prime Minister Stephen Harper's international conference on the topic that his older sister and brother died soon after birth.

He says he never knew them and that he has never told that story in public before.

But he says food was scarce in his South Korean village and women dreaded giving birth.

Harper says he plans to cajole other world leaders to pony up funds for his initiative, which aims to reduce the millions of deaths of young mothers and children in the developing world.
