Climate change activists scale the gates of Buckingham Palace

LONDON Four climate change activists scaled gates at Queen Elizabeth II’s Buckingham Palace home on Saturday and locked themselves to railings in a protest demanding more urgent action to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

The group, from the Climate Siren environmentalist movement, wore T-shirts with the slogan “Climate emergency. 10 per cent annual emission cuts” and chanted through a loud hailer.

London’s Metropolitan Police said the four had climbed up a gate at the front of the palace and secured themselves to it, sitting with their legs through the railings.

The protesters unfurled a banner quoting a 2008 speech by Prince Charles, the queen’s son and heir, warning over a lack of progress on tacking climate change. It read: “’The doomsday clock of climate change is ticking ever faster towards midnight.”

In a letter to the queen posted to the group’s website, the activists said they were carrying out their protest in the hope of drawing attention to stalled progress on environmental issues.

“It is time that you and all public figures with influence followed the example of your son by speaking up loudly ... about the escalating threat of catastrophic climate change,” the group said.

About 100 people stood at the scene, watching the protest.

Siobhan Grimes, a 24-year-old from east London, said she agreed that there was a need for more urgency on green issues.

“Our politicians aren’t doing enough. We’re hoping to inspire people to wake up to the consequences of catastrophic climate change,” she said.

The queen was not at the palace Saturday, since she was attending a horse racing event in Ascot, southern England.

Thank goodness that TheSpec had the good sense to consult with an East Londoner by the name of Siobhan Grimes... Because she throws her support behind the movement, it's bound to get governmental attention

The security folks should have turned the water cannons loose on them

Or clipped their own handcuffs to these idiots (one to the wrist, the other end to
the railing) & and left them there for the hours (or days, whatever) until the Queen
was about to arrive....and then hauled them in for B&E & Trespassing before she
actually arrived.

Yeah, because the Queen decides environmental policy.

They picked the wrong method and the wrong target. They're not too swift.

Yes, let's all wait until it's too late to do anything about climate change.

With tobacco products probably millions of people died early deaths while the industry and its spin doctors scammed us, with fossil fuels and climate change the death toll could very easily be in the billions as entire climatic systems loss stability.

With predictions of some of the hottest years in recorded history coming up in 2013-2014 it's going to become very difficult for the sociopaths among us to keep claiming everything is just fine.

Sociopaths? Really? Thats a new term tossed into this AGW debate that
I haven't seen yet. So those that question the "settled" debate or the
movement surrounding this issue are not just deniers now?

Those that question the issue are almost totally reliant on the industry backed and directed campaign to distort the genuine science often carried out by some of the same people that worked with the tobacco industry to allow it to continue to sell hazardous products with little or no accountability.

It takes a sociopath to knowingly endanger others even if there is a strong profit motive as there is with the fossil fuel sector.

Well, good to know, I guess.

It's only been going on for over 25 years and the oil and gas and coal people have put a huge amount of time and money into keeping us as confused as possible on the issue even though they often get called on it.

Things like the Greening Earth Society which was in fact a front for the Western Fuels Association:

Greening Earth Society - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

or GMI, which has been heavily funded by ExxonMobil and other large private sector companies.

Royal Society tells Exxon: stop funding climate change denial | Environment | The Guardian

It's probably the biggest and most expensive scam in history and the public is already picking up the bill, which is huge and will only grow.

Both sides of the debate seem to be doing what you accuse one side of doing.
Lots of money on the table, & lots to be made by both sides in this issue.

Both sides of the debate?

You mean the majority of the researchers doing actual science on the changing global environment and the few "experts" hired by the industry to cast as much doubt on the authentic evidence as possible.

As I've said, the climate change denial movement is almost totaly an industry created phenomenom, lacks any real veracity and is modeled on the same campaign employed by the tobacco industry to avoid negative health links and utilitzes some of the same people.

There aren't two equal sides in this "debate", as with tobacco poducts there's the genuine evidence of serious negative impacts of using fossil fuel products and the industry inspired and to some degree run program to distort and confuse that evidence as much as possible.

So there is no real debate then? No questioning? You're either with us or against us?
Lovelock still endorses AGW...but at a slower pace, & is turned against by the
"movement" including yourself. Kind'a spooky, don't'cha think?

Don't question the "movement" you heretics! Don't question the "settled science" unless
you are in the employ of industry that profits from the denial of AGW! If you do, you are
a phycopath! Denier! Bought by the Oil Companies!

Where there's smoke, there's usually fire....& I agree with you in that both sides don't
seem to be equal.

Queen's Guard

Changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace.

A sentry of the Scots Guards at Buckingham Palace

The Queen's Guard is the name given to the contingent of infantry responsible for guarding Buckingham Palace and St. James's Palace (including Clarence House) in London. The guard is made up of a company of soldiers from a single regiment, which is split in two, providing a detachment for Buckingham Palace and a detachment for St James's Palace. Because the Sovereign's official residence is still St James's, the guard commander (called the 'Captain of the Guard') is based there, as are the regiment's colours. When the Sovereign is in residence, the Queen's Guard numbers three officers and 40 other ranks, with four sentries each posted at Buckingham Palace (on the forecourt) and St James's Palace (two at the main entrance in Pall Mall, two in Friary Court). This reduces to three officers and 31 ORs, with two sentries each when the Sovereign is not in residence.[1] The Queen's Guard is not purely ceremonial in nature. They provide sentries during the day and night, and during the latter hours they patrol the grounds of the Palace. Until 1959, the sentries at Buckingham Palace were stationed outside the fence. This stopped following an incident involving a female tourist and a Coldstream Guardsman — due to the continued pestering of tourists and sightseers, the guardsman kicked the tourist on the ankle as he marched. The tourist made a complaint to the police and, despite sympathy, the sentry was confined to barracks for ten days. Not long after, the sentries were moved inside the fence.[2]
