It is not that easy to compare, in many of these countries the cradle to grave system
means higher taxes but in fact they have in many cases more disposable incomes.
left in their pockets. Medicare and other services are paid through taxes to the state.

True. I'm sure there are dozens of countries who would like to trade their problems for ours.

And how much of our resources have been sold off to foreign interests?

And how much of our resources have been sold off to foreign interests?

We have an abundant source of resources and are finding new sources daily.

This is why Canada's economy is so great, and we have plenty of jobs.

Canada is a country of 36 million, we do not need these resources and could never use them in our life time, or our children's children's life time..

36 million, the population of Mexico City, or New York City..

Not all of them so relax, even your grandkids will have a war to fight in at this rate.

Now if somebody would drop the piggy bank we could burn up those same resources in fun and fool-hardy ways that leave the same stuff to all our ancestors as they probably won't want to destroy their own garden of food. Burning energy means something is transferred. If seas start to rise, time to create an industry that builds pontoon boats, new ands DYI jobs. Sooner or later salt water is going to be the main source, as long as we save enough to oil the bearings the transition is do-able. That we do it later rather than sooner just means our overlords aren't very bright.

Interesting: higher tax rates & higher standards of living.

No real surprise there. Most of the high tax nations also have higher basic wages. Anyone who has ever visited Europe knows that the cost of living is much higher due to higher wages for workers, but as DG pointed out many Europeans do not have large out of pocket expenses for things like health care.

The American people take pride in their ability to be gouged by their health industries.

The last thing the American people want is for the government to negotiate a lower price for them to pay and out of their taxes, they would prefer to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars out of their pockets and end up homeless because that is the American way.

Sarcasm aside, there is some accuracy to your comment. Americans in their own news media seem to be deeply distrustful of the government, and seem to believe that a free market is much more capable of reaching efficiency. The problem with this perspective on healthcare is that it is not a free market, and the health care industry knows it and abuses it.

After all, when your choices are death or a huge debt, nobody takes death because the price is unfair.

Absolutely. If the US medical system had real free enterprise in healthcare most medical professionals would see their incomes drop drastically. Ditto for the pharmaceutical industry.

And many love to see 45,000 die every year from lack of health care ~ that is a blood tax they enjoy paying.

Many Europeans don't bother buying cars since they have excellent trolleys for local transportation and trains for national travel. I have known Europeans in NY who said their employer pay for their vacations! The record clearly shows that the higher the taxes, the higher the standard of living. The l lower the taxes and more tax shelters provided for the wealthy, the lower the standard of living - this ultimately results in ''austerity'' that only burdens the poor, not the rich. These, among other reasons, is why Europeans don't complain about taxes.

Tax shelters aren't 'provided', they are a byproduct of a tax system that is motivating high income earners to find a way to mitigate the high costs without leaving the jurisdiction.

The standard of living is not a result of the tax system, but of the degree and level of commerce that exists in the nation. Taxation is a byproduct of commercial activity and is levied in order to provide the services, systems and infrastructure needed by all to operate and survive.

They have the best health care in the world. The main reason their prices are higher per capita than ours is because of guvmint regs.

Walter I am talking about the private healthcare in America.

I remember watching a 60Minute news story on the American private health insurance where they were getting 60% discounts from hospitals while the person off the street had to pay full price and those companies never passed it on to their policy holders just increased their fees if they had to go to the hospital and cancelling their coverage if they went too many times.

If there are government regulations this only means that they tried to make the healthcare industry more honest and fair.
The healthcare industry is still gouging ordinary people and the only way to protect the people have government involved in the process and healthcare would lower their cost because the government would know the whole story.
