War Is A Racket

A speech delivered in 1933, by Major General Smedley Butler, USMC.

Smedley Butler

WAR is a racket. It always has been

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives.

A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of the people. Only a small "inside" group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few, at the expense of the very many. Out of war a few people make huge fortunes.

Sounds like a perfect description of a socialist government.

It's always comforting to see the crayon crew come out for the rich and powerful war mongers. They represent the front line of fascism in the west. The bankers don't have a hope in hell. This is what minimum wage ultimately gets them.

For your sake, I hope you're wrong. What would you do without that sizable trust fund you suckle at.

This is what minimum wage ultimately gets them.
What do you know of minimum wage. What with that trust fund, left to you by dear old dad.

You and your capitalist agenda. You make me giggle.

Zee trust is in precious woods suitable for the continued good health of beavers. You sir are obviously a poor downtrodden bank slave who can never see the day when you are not owned lock stock and panty hose by the filthy international bankers.

Interesting article. In fact profiteering from the armaments industry goes back the 19th century and was epitomized by Basil Zaharoff who has often been referred to as the "merchant of death." Zaharoff made a fortune peddling armaments to various European powers and then playing them off against each other. He had no scruples about selling arms to the Germans, British, French, Turks, Austrians or anyone else who would buy them. He was aided in his endeavours by huge armaments firms like Krupp and Vickers which profited greatly from arming their nations.

Interestingly, the article not only points out how companies profit from military spending, but also how wasteful the process is with huge amounts being spent on weapons and products of dubious quality. Something of this process could be seen during the Reagan era when dozens of US corporations eagerly jumped on Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative (Star Wars), a plan designed to protect the US from intercontinental ballistic missiles. In spite of the fact that researchers in several companies admitted that designing such a system was probably impossible, they had no problem in accepting the government dollars directed their way. G.W. Bush initiated a similar plan to protect the US from missile attacks by "rogue nations," in spite of the fact that no real threat to the US existed and the Russians and Chinese regarded such a project as an unfriendly act.

This is likely true.

I wasn't graced with a sizable trust fund, built on the backs of people like myself, administered by bankers, and suckled at by you.

You capitalists are funny.
