Recently released statistics on those arrested in the recent outburst of violence, looting, and arson in London reveals that the majority of the participants had previously criminal records. In fact two-thirds of those arrested had committed a crime prior to the riots; 25% of those arrested had committed 10 or more crimes; and those arrested averaged 15 crimes per person overall. In the words of one official "existing criminals were on the rampage." In other words; those inclined to be criminals took advantage of an incident of civil disorder to commit crimes.

Which makes the unwillingness of the police, and the inability of an unarmed population to deal with the mess early even more of a tragedy.

I'm really not sure why you keep on harping about the effectiveness of firearms as a deterrent to crime. Do you actually have any evidence that shows that gun ownership actually deters crime? I have never seen any. In fact the high murder rate in the US and the high incidence of guns being turned on victims in the US seems to indicate that firearms actually make crimes worse. It is interesting to note that in the London riots; in spite of the general destruction there was only one death - and that was due to a criminal wielding a gun. People who advocate firearm ownership always seem to overlook the fact that if honest citizens can get guns so can criminals. The problem is criminals are much more likely to use them.

It sounds like the UK needs to stop being soft on crime. Leaving a bunch of thugs on the street to form gangs, loot and vandalize is not a good idea.
