The socialists do not believe in free speech unless it is supports their views. The same could also be said for rightwing fundies. Which leaves us liberal minded people being assailed from both sides.

If there was no free speech we wouldn't be having this discussion.
This discussion hasn't touched on "illegal or sensitive topics".

Try posting notice of an Anti-Israel rally in Ottawa and see how far you get before someone pulls the plug.

Lots of Jew-haters have posted lots of silly nonsense here and nobody has "pulled the plug".

quote "Police could listen into internet? Oh my!...what does that have to do with free speech?"
Anything you say on the internet can be held against in a court of law.

Is it a shock to anyone that universities are mostly filled with "left" leaning folk? These are centers of learning, and it's in most cases a given that new knowledge leads to progressive views. It's not indoctrination, it's what happens when most normal people are shown different perspectives, and often are forced outside their zone of comfort. Outside that zone, givens that were taken for granted are shown to be not so clear cut. While conservative views are by contrast slow to change.

That doesn't mean conservative views are suppressed. Quite the contrary. It does mean that some generalized conservative views will be challenged, and that's what happens at university. I'm exposed to new ideas, many old ideas that built the foundation for new ideas, and I'm challenged to see a larger picture. Some people will keep their idealism, others will soften, or perhaps harden on those new ideas.

The guests at universities tend to draw out: interested students, sympathetic people from the community, and occasionally ideological opposites. I've never been at one where a pie was thrown in the face, but then my schools haven't been the type where one would see Ann Coulter appearing to give a talk.

This canard I find to be a particularly paranoid talking point for conservatives.

No but, then again, that's not what this thread is about.

While conservative views are by contrast slow to change.

Left-wing propaganda. Left and right are both stuck and loath to change.

Why not?

Again, more left-wing propaganda. I'm slightly left of center and I completely agree that the left loves to stifle free speech. However, if I were in your school, I'd love to here from Ann. I seek out contrary opinions. You'll never learn anything discussing issues with only like minded individuals.

No, it's what one of your links was about.

I didn't use left or right, you'll notice I said conservatives, which are much more slow to change than progressives. That's not propaganda, that's a fact.

Why would she lecture at an Agricultural college? She has nothing useful to say here. She rants about the left, which has sweet F all to do with growing food.

The guests at my schools have tended to focus on policy, and leading edge research in the field, and not where the policy or research comes from.

That, is why not.

Again, more left-wing propaganda. I'm slightly left of center and I completely agree that the left loves to stifle free speech. However, if I were in your school, I'd love to here from Ann. I seek out contrary opinions.

Again, I have never heard her say anything intelligent about agricultural issues, so in my position I don't think you would love to hear from her.

If I want to hear what someone like her has to say, I can read it on the net, hear it on the political broadcasts, or read her book.

You'll never learn anything discussing issues with only like minded individuals.
Duh. Perhaps you should read my posts more carefully, especially when selectively responding to only a few points. I refer you to the second paragraph...

No shock to me, Universities are where people get a bloated and unrealistic view of themselves and their intelligence.
These are centers of learning, and it's in most cases a given that new knowledge leads to progressive views.
, yer kidding right?

It's not indoctrination,
BS, here's my proof...
While conservative views are by contrast slow to change.

What is it about the word contrast you two can't understand? Look at progressive policies, and compare them to conservative policies. One of those two is slower to change...

And there's more proof...;-)

I think Harpo changed his stripes pretty darn quick in the last couple years,...

Beyond that, you and Dex, being the exception Ton, I have pretty much given up conversing with University grads. Especially Carlton grads...... Complete know it all's. Complete asshats. Blithering leftards without so much as a second thought about other perspectives but what was installed (Yes, I said 'installed') into their myopic minds by some Professor.
