(IANS)

Beijing, Jan 14 (Xinhua) China Wednesday shut down 84 additional websites for containing 'pornographic and lewd content' in its month-long campaign against online porn, bringing the number of blocked sites to 175.

The Special Operation Office said in a statement that government departments would step up efforts to continue to close illegal websites and 'severe penalties' would be meted out to violators of law.

Public distribution of pornography is illegal in China.

The campaign was launched earlier this month by the State Council's Information Office, the public security and culture ministries and four other government agencies.

Previously, the country had blacklisted 50 websites, including search engines Google, Baidu and MSN China which were accused of providing obscene content and of being slow to delete erotic materials.

According to China's Internet Network Information Center, the number of Internet users in China has touched 298 million in 2008, overtaking the US as the nation with the world's largest online population.

Good work China .

Definitely! Judging by their population they don't need anymore porn! They should be putting Salt Peter in the public water supply too.

Genetically Engineered Corn for everyone!!! Removing search engines makes
using the internet to search for porn (or pretty much anything else) problematic.
I wonder what will happen to those Chinese people who may have been
arrested in this crack-down? What is the punishment over there for showing
your nasty bits, or pictures of someone else's???

Then you'd have a crack-team of special agents from China dropping in from earth's orbit from one of their rockets from space to avoid detection in crossing the borders, land on your roof at home, smash into your home, gun you down, burn the place down with a rolled up newspaper dipped in gas left in the oven and then they vanish like ninjas and rocket pack back to the rocket in orbit, leaving very few traces as the bullets they shot you with were frozen chunks of ice and would melt by the time authorities got to your body.

So be careful in what you do.

277 illegal websites closed down in China in last 11 days
China National News
Friday 16th January, 2009
(ANI)

New Delhi, Jan 16 : An eye-opening report revealed that China's Internet authorities have closed a total of 277 websites, alleged to contain pornography, within last 11 days.

The campaign has extended to cell phone games, online novels, videos and radio programs, reports China Daily.

Approximately 145 websites allegedly running illegal advertisements for sex-related drugs and treatments have been penalized, while more than 200 cases of obscene cell phone games and novels have been dealt with.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has urged all telecommunications companies to strengthen management of basic operations and cooperate with the government on the crackdown.

A principal of the Special Operation Office for the Crackdown on Online Porn and Lewd Content said, the crackdown was not "flash in the pan", and it would be followed up with more activities.

The State Council's Information Office, Ministry of Public Security and Ministry of Culture and four other government agencies launched the campaign on January 5.

Public distribution of pornography is illegal in China. Previously, the country had blacklisted 50 websites, including search engines Google, Baidu and MSN China, which were accused of providing obscene content and of being slow to delete erotic materials.

Too late the barn is open and the horses are out very hard to get them back.
Chinas is presently faced with a sexual revolution. To shut the web sites down it clearly indicates the phobia Chinese officials are experiencing. Reality is, that all the Asian youth is more then the Chinese army, and that will be difficult to impose on the youth no sex.

So, who gets to define what's pornographic or obscene in China? Blacklisting search engines doesn't seem a sensible way to proceed, they don't provide content, nor can they delete it, they just help you find it. That's like trying to delete the index to a reference book because you don't like some of the things people might find with it. Sounds like a bunch of uptight self-righteous moralists trying to inflict their standards on everybody, which I think is indefensible.

I don't believe images or stories of people engaging in sexual activity are intrinsically pornographic or obscene, unless one of the participants is 10 years old or something like that, but the line's pretty fuzzy, and at least sexual activity is normal human behaviour. Murdering people is not, but you can see that on tv any time, and you won't see much explicit sex, unless you subscribe to and watch porn channels. I've seen so-called "porn" on the Internet of course, and the best I can say for it is that it gets old pretty fast. But I have a lovely wife of 30 years living with me, and she's far more interesting than any image or movie. She's real.
