Brits divided over 'poppy hijab'

A poppy-print Muslim headscarf has stirred controversy in Britain.
The Islamic Society of Britain and the think-tank British Future began selling the scarf on Oct. 31 to raise money for the British Royal Legion.
The idea was to raise awareness about the 400,000 Muslims, most of them Indian, who fought alongside British troops in the First World War.
"It is hoped that the garment will serve as a symbol of Britain's diverse and shared history and the coming together of people from all backgrounds to remember," the British Future website says.
Designed by 24-year-old Muslim fashion student Tabinda-Kauser Ishaq, the $22 scarf is meant to "offer British Muslims a new way to mark remembrance."
But not everyone thinks Muslims need a new way.
In a widely shared blog post Sofia Ahmed calls the so-called poppy hijab "the most ill-conceived of the recent spate of 'we are not extremists' initiatives" and says no other religious group is pressured to prove its allegiance in such a way.
"I also take issue with the fact that a symbol of my religion is being appropriated as a marketing tool for empire," Ahmed wrote.

Saw this yesterday. No matter what a Muslim does, some will shxt on it.
No wonder they have such racial divisions.

I don't see an issue with it. At least she is doing something about Remembrance Day rather than trying to make it so Muslim students don't have to attend the ceremonies.

I like it. Of course the Brits, being bigots and not real bright, will forget that plenty of Muslims have fought and died for the Shiny Hat, just like they forget the Catholics.

People who aren't Church of England shouldn't fight the Shiny Hat's wars.

The hijab should be banned and so should the burka. The Belgians and French and other European countries have done it, with many women's rights groups applauding it, so I don't see why Britain can't follow suit.

Keep the British curries like chicken tikka masala and Balti.

Ban the burka and the hijab.
Because chicken tikka masala and Balti have a place in Western society, and the burqa and hijab don't.

What's the difference between the hijab and the snoods and other headdresses British women were required by their religion and culture to wear for several centuries?

Correct.

Muslim women are often forced to wear the burka and the hijab by their menfolk - their fathers, husbands, brothers, uncles - as a symbol of women's lowly place in Islam (we all know what Islam thinks of women). Women are often beaten for not wearing the burka or hijab. The burka and hijab are, like Islam itself, anti-social, backward, oppressive and mediaeval. There ARE some women who choose to wear the hijab and the burka in Western countries like Britain, but they usually do it as intimidation, to say to everybody "We are Muslim and Britain will become Muslim." It's no coincidence that the number of women wearing the burka in Britain has greatly increased since 9/11.

And the thing which really gets on my tits is that women in many Muslim countries choose not to wear the burka. You rarely see women in Pakistan wearing it, because they see it as oppressive. You go to the big cities in Pakistan and the women are all wearing trendy modern clothes, like jeans and T-shirts, as a way of showing their freedom and liberation. Yet here, in supposedly free Britain where women are supposed to have more rights than they do in the likes of Pakistan, you walk around the Muslim areas in places like Bolton, Bradford and Leicester and all you see are huge herds of women in those creepy full-body veils, looking like mediaeval Daleks. If Muslim countries like Pakistan rarely have the burka and hijab because they see them as oppressive and backward then the burka and hijab should also have no place in British society.

A 2011 poll showed that 66% of the British people support the banning of the burka. That was three years ago and still there are no moves underway to ban it. Yet again the Left-wing Establishment which runs this country is showing its complete and utter disdain for the views of the ordinary people. It's no wonder people are moving to Ukip in their droves.
