Inside the US Nuclear Silos Where Floppy Disk Are Still High-Tech

It's not very often you get to see inside a US Air Force nuclear silo—but CBS recently got to take a peek for us. In this video, Lesley Stahl finds that they're not quite as high-tech as you might like to think.

This segment, which you can watch below, appeared on 60 Minutes, and it provides a rare glimpse into the inner working of America's nuclear bunkers. Cozying up with the ageing rockets, two things are striking. First, the staff don't seem wildly experienced. Second, the technology down there still relies on 8-inch floppy disks from the 70s. Thank goodness the nation is so well protected. [60 Minutes via Verge]

If the command is on a floppy, it should be A: and users is an XP concept probably beyond the 70s. Please correct your title to A:\USAF\AFSPC\lanch\misslecmnd.exe.

Accuracy in these matters is extremely important.

Missile Silos were more or less obsolete from the time they were first built, so this is par for the course.

The US nuclear arsenal is outmoded. To be effective it would have to be modernized. But there is something attractive about Uncle Sam being unable to deter anyone. After all, which American cities would be attacked? Places where leftists concentrate.

They better hope that the disks with the launch codes don't have disk rot!;)
