Nicola Tesla is the subject of the movie "The Prestige", played by David Bowie.

Tesla was the inventor who "lit the world" - inventing the Tesla coil and the first practical induction motor, the electrical generator, and the Tesla unit for 'magnetic flux density' was the result of his work too.

He installed the first hydro-electric power plant, at Niagra Falls [Canadian side!], and was likely also the inventor and original patent holder for the lightbulb that Edison got credit for.

Over 700 patents were issued to him worldwide, and there could have been a 1000 more.

There has been less that complete recognition of his acheivements, mostly due to others taking credit for them or holding patents. Tesla didn't really mind, although he could have been wealthier for it.

Of course, such a great brain as he would have some quirks. That doesn't mean his lightbulb was not burning brightly!! [ha ha]. He thought he came from Venus, for one thing.

The thing that makes Tesla such a compelling, yet sad case is that he was genuinely brilliant and had carved himself a real place in history with his accomplishments. His contributions to the field of electrical engineering are on a scale to rival that of Edison and Steinmetz and we enjoy the fruits of his labours every time we flick on a light switch. However, his lonely work habits, refusal to write things down, and flat-out eccentricities have made him one of those figures that historians cross the street to avoid.

So, it was somewhat risky that the electric car producer is calling his company Tesla Motors, and that the most advanced electric car, about to hit the market, is called the Tesla Roadster. Courageous people those!

[you are right to suspect me for trying to get the word out about this electric car, by being sneaky and disguising it as a history of Nicola Tesla]
[I suspect it will be bought out, crushed, sabotaged, and generally just never make it to market due to the powerfull oil interests who stand to lose their monopoly on transportation fuel sales]

[but it does work great, and the cost will be half, then one-quarter - down to $25,000 in 5 years]

Sigh....
