A new scan has revealed two hidden chambers in Egypt's Great Pyramid of Giza.
Experts confirmed the existence of the mysterious "cavities" on Saturday after Egypt's antiquities ministry made an earlier announcement about "two anomalies" in the 4,500-year-old pyramid, according to the U.K.'s Daily Mail.
The pyramid, which was intended as a pharaoh's tomb, already has three known chambers.
The project, known as Operation ScanPyramid, began last October in search of hidden rooms in the Giza pyramids, known as Khufu and Khafre, as well as the Bent and Red pyramids in Dahshur, south of Cairo.
Researchers used a mix of infrared thermography, muon radiography imaging and 3D reconstruction to look inside the pyramids in a non-invasive, non-destructive way. After the scans they were able to create maps of the labyrinth of passages and chambers inside the pyramids.
"We are now able to confirm the existence of a 'void' hidden behind the north face, that could have the form of at least one corridor going inside the Great Pyramid," experts from Operation ScanPyramids said in a statement.
Another "cavity" was found in the northeast flank, researchers said.
In May, the project unveiled a newly discovered second chamber in the Bent Pyramid. It was previously suggested Pharaoh Sneferu was buried inside the pyramid in a hidden chamber, but that was ruled in in the scans.
Experts have been arguing for years over the possibility of a potential secret chamber in King Tut's tomb, so these newly discovered "voids" in the Giza pyramids play into the possibility that there is still plenty to discover in Egypt's mysterious ancient structures.
More tests are planned to determine the size and function of the "cavities."
