Explorers believe they have found some of a notorious pirate's treasure in the waters off Madagascar.
A series of tweets from the African island nation's president's office Thursday said a joint U.S./U.K. archaeological research team found a 55-kg silver bar near Sainte Marie Island.
"Shipwreck and treasure discovery ... Captain Kidd's 'Adventure Galley'?" the president's office tweeted.
The Adventure Galley was the ship piloted by Capt. William Kidd, who was hanged for piracy in 1701.
American undersea explorer Barry Clifford and his team were diving in the wreck of what they believe is the Adventure Galley when they found the silver bar earlier this week, the BBC reports.
They presented it to Madagascar President Hery Rajaonarimampianina in a ceremony on Thursday, but the treasure is expected to go to a museum.
Clifford thinks there are many more bars to be found in the shipwreck, the BBC said.
