By the time the Apollo 17 mission landed on the moon on December 11, 1972, the three Apollo astronauts and NASA control already knew theirs would be the last Apollo lunar mission. What happened to the space race to the moon, and why was it coming to an end only three years after the first lunar landing?

yeah, it's probably better to go to a much more expensive and dangerous place like MARS! :lol:

anyway, once the chinese go to the moon, you know damn well they're gonna 'touch' america's stuff and piss people off. probably race those moon buggies and break the lunar land-speed record . well, don't come crying to me.

When the Chinese go to the moon and start exploiting it, the American cost/benefit ratio will again change. At that juncture, the US military will land on the moon and establish a permanent presence.

Guess they thought there were better things to spend the money on - like Vietnam. That worked out well.
