I would be very suspicious of anything that requires ingesting and hails from China.
.
I am doomed...I've been using mugs and toothpaste made in China for the past five years since I've lived here...oh but so has everybody in Canada too.

Not all Canadians buy the cheap, poor quality Chinese produced crap. Granted though, many prefer to buy cheap shyte for a buck or two over decent quality Canadian products for twice the price. /sigh

My balls are healing up nicely Karrie, thanks for your concern.

Doing a little searching, I was able to find a few referances to lead in coffee mugs [see links below], and certainly "pottery glazes" do contain lead.

As for the Chinese taking drastic action to fix their product's toxicity, I would not be so confident, missle. They just cannot moniter everything, there is so much production in China, much of it in little shops and factories without quality control. After all, we are STILL seeing these almost daily announcements of toys and other products with lead levels way over the acceptable limits coming into north america.

"lead poisoning from Italian coffee mugs" mentioned in paragraph 4:

http://www.chicagoartistsresource.org/?q=node/14904

"Most glazes for ceramic products contain lead"
[but are safe because it is contained]

http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/CONSUMER/CON00081.html

"Lead alert facts: lead in ceramics"

etc: Lead in lipstick:

- two more links at the end of this article -

Have a good day everyone, sorry to be a bug...

Just noticed that my new jeans were made in China. Remember when we made our own[Great Western Garment CO.]? The few ceramic coffee mugs I have were all made either here or in the US.

We also used to scoff at and mock the goods made in Japan too, so who knows?

I just finished reading this thread from beginning to end and I get the impression that China is contaminated (land, air, and sea) with lead. If that were the case, don't you think that there would be some serious health problems with their people by now? I mean, lead poisoning, even at minute levels is pretty serious (or so I've been told).

Well of course, why do you think China is such an unintelligent country, backsliding into oblivion?

Oh, what? they're not? They're really smart and booming toward becoming the world's major superpower? Oh.

Well, perhaps that explains some of this smear campaign? Just maybe?

Generally, goods produced in Canada do not contain lead, GHB nor are they produced under slave labour unlike China.

to be fair Durka, none of the Chinese toys have CONTAINED GHB, the glues just broke down into GHB. Frankly, I don't think that's any worse than all the soft plastic toys that we all used to make that were brutal on kids' livers. Oversights happen.

No sweat shops in China?

Candar reactors, steel, bacon, etc etc. The point is China, that China hasn't the slightest concept of "Quality Control".

Let's see.....superior quality goods made in Canada would include.........anything you can think of......NOTHING made in China is of the same quality as North American goods......Chinese electronics don't work, your boots fall to pieces, your clothing is shoddy, your firearms are not durable.........and that is ALL from personal experience.

Besides that, millions of toys have been recalled here because they are unsafe due to chemicals in their paint or plastic......

Animal feed made with ingredients from China was killing pets.......hardly the point.

Foodstuffs for humans were found to be unsafe....

Shall I go on?

I mean, I haven't even begun to talk about a free press and an open society....both produced in Canada.

BTW, Canadian prisoners do not do slave labour in factories.....nor are they executed, nor does their gov't sell their vital organs on the open market..........without their approval......

Don't get into a comparison game, China has a LONG LONG way to go before it can hold a candle to the west on a large number of fronts.

THAT'S THE POINT COLPY,There are not too many things produced in Canada and those which are, are not of the highest quality. I really can't agree with you Copy , it is not as bad as you paint it out to be.As the matter of fact it is not bad at all .Look at the economy ,it hasn't stop growing which means the world is buying Chinese products , more and more. Before leaving Canada in '01,I have purchased some short sleeves color shirts which were made in China.I still have/ use them on occasions /not bad .The lap top I,m using is a Chinese made.,Hasse ,very inexpensive ,it's bin with me all around China for over 5yrs ,no problems of any kind .When it started slowing down ,I've added ( for less than $30) more memory and it is as fast as my desk top.

Am agreeing with the Japan analogy. Just after the War, we were flooded with tin crap from that country , but after some time, Japan started producing some of the highest quality goods ever. China will evolve and will likely do the same.

Yes, missile. I hope that happens.
Its just that China got like what...hordes of workers working for the GLOBAL market?
Which, ultimately, may be the factor for the long-term bad stuff.

Its hard to control a big market unless we got a world policing force...which we REALLY don't want. e.g. world under one rule
