Help, I want to buy a used car around 2 years old. I have owned Fords-aka crap and Pontiacs -- aka crappier.

So please can anyone recommend a quality used vehicle, or do you have one that you would recommend.

P.S. I will never drive a Mini-van.

Try a Honda Accord or Civic or a Toyota..

What do you need in a vehicle. For a straight commuter it's hard to beat the Toyota Yaris. We bought a new Corolla in 2005 but needed a second vehicle. We got the 06 Yaris base model and it is awesome. With taxes your under 17k and don't get someone elses problems. Lease or buy at under $275 month.

(p.s. - I don't work for Toyota)

I've done a lot of research and the Toyota keeps coming up the winner with Honda second and Hundi third. Anyone one own a Kia?

I'd agree with Toyota. I bought a '97 Tercel two years ago for next to nothing and haven't had to put a cent into it. I could sell it tomorrow and get it all back. The depreciation is negligable. So my cost of ownership (excluding tax & insurance) was zero. I'd take a used Corolla over a brand new Yaris anyday. And stay away from the minivans!

If you like Toyota, I would personally suggest you go with the Tundra. The 2006's now have 4 doors and they are really nice trucks. Perfect family vehicle. Or if your budget doesn't allow for the Tundra, the new Toyota Tacoma (also available in 4 doors) is cheaper and also a very nice family truck.

'Nother vote for Toyota. I've owned three since 1988, and I really don't think I'd buy anything else anymore. In my experience they have absolutely bullet-proof reliability. None of them have cost me anything but routine maintenance. Most models aren't particularly stylish, and you'll generally pay a bit of a premium for them over equivalent models from Ford, GM, and Daimler-Chrysler, but I choose a car based mostly on reliability and durability, not looks. Get hold of one of Phil Edmonston's Lemon Aid books on used cars, and Consumer Reports' reviews of cars. They'll tell you the straight dope on what's good, what's bad, and what to stay away from, and will well repay the time and effort you put into studying them. Your local library should have copies recent enough to be useful.
