Doors left open on Milton super mailbox
By Kevin Connor, Toronto Sun First posted: Wednesday, February 11, 2015 05:15 PM EST | Updated: Wednesday, February 11, 2015 05:21 PM EST
Snow, rain, heat or gloom of night might not be a problem for Canada posties.
But how about keeping mail under lock and key?
Milton resident Stanley Garcia sent the Toronto Sun pictures of his neighbourhood’s mail blowing in the wind after Tuesday’s delivery to a super mail box. The doors were left open.
The pictures arrived a day after photos surfaced of a box of mail that was abandoned on the street in Toronto’s Kengsington Market next to a relay lock box where carriers pick up items for delivery.
Garcia came across his unlocked super box while looking for financial statements.
“I came to look for my statements on family income and investments and things were flapping in the wind. This is information that I don’t want someone to get a hold of,” Garcia said, questioning how often postal workers fail to properly stow mail away.
“It can’t be just a coincidence and blame it on human error. If the Canada Post union wants the support of the public, this isn’t the way to do it.”
Garcia said he didn’t receive an apology when he contacted Canada Post to alert them of the situation.
“We are very appreciative that the customer contacted Canada Post promptly so we could rectify the problem,” said Canada Post spokesman Eugene Knapik. “Security of the mail is very important to Canada Post. This is an unusual occurrence and we are following up to determine what happened.”
Mississauga’s Bob Clark also supplied photos of a stack of mail that was left on top of a super box in October that included government cheques.
“I contacted Canada Post and complained to customer service. I was asked to drop all the mail in the post box outside the local store post office. I was to receive a follow up call — as I requested — regarding the outcome of my complaint and I heard nothing,” Clark said.
He said in December, his super box was left open and it took four calls to have it locked back up.
“Again, no follow-up or return call to us on the outcome of this issue involving the responsible party. Same Super Box
“Again no follow up or return call to us on the outcome of this issue, involving the responsible party. Same Super Box and the same route,” Clark said.
Knapik says Canada Post investigates all incidents where mail may have been mishandled.

Mail delivery is becoming a thing of the past.

Mail delivery twice a week is now adaquate, all we have to do now is to completely eliminate it.
