I'm using XP and I will hang on to it as long as I can. My next O.S. will be Linix.

I was told by a computer guy that Windows 7 actually works, as opposed to Vista. He made the analogy that Vista is like Windows ME (I had the misfortune to have been given a computer with ME on it); an interim piece of garbage.

We have one laptop in the house with 7 on it, but I have not used it other than to set it up.

If I was buying a new machine that came with 7, I'd use it; I wouldn't bother doing an upgrade; to my mind, there's no benefit. (Assuming you'd be upgrading from XP or Vista).

I have also heard good things about Windows 7. For one, it actually uses fewer resources than Vista, the first Windows system to do so (use fewer resources than its predecessor).

I currently have Windows XP and I am quite happy with it, I have no desire to upgrade. Also, I don’t know if they give a DOS platform with Windows 7. I have many programs (written by me) which run in DOS and which I regularly use. If Windows 7 does not have a DOS platform, that would be a non starter for me.

When I bought the computer I have now it didn't come with any kind of O.S.. The computer I was replacing had Win 98se. The new computer would not accept 98 so I had to buy a($250.00) copy of XP. The exact lineage of my 98 was a bit fuzzy because it was one of these passed around things that I couldn't do the upgrade with. I assume I would be able to upgrade XP to Windows 7 but I am getting fairly comfortable with Ubunto and unless I buy a computer with 7 already in it, Ubunto will be the O.S. of choice.

My take on it: if you're using Vista, it's worthwhile upgrading to Windows 7, if you're using XP it's not.

And if you're using Linux, you're already ahead of the game.

That is what I heard as well. I'd go with 7 on my next computer. Vista is crap.

Hello Liberalman,
You can visit the official Microsoft Upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7 site here: Upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7 - Help & How-to - Microsoft Windows
There are some nice videos tutorials and steps to take when migrating from Windows XP to Windows 7. And yes it is true you cannot directly upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7 you can take some steps to ensure a smooth process.

Thanks again and good luck!

The ME analogy doesn't really work as Windows ME was a subset of DOS/Windows 95/98 whereas Windows 7 shares the same Kernal as Vista. With 7, Microsoft basically reworked the interface and made things more sensible and logical.

I personally use (and still use) Windows Vista at work, Linux on my netbook, and Windows 7 on my home computer. I would say that 7 is much better than XP in terms of productivity within the OS itself. The Libraries concept and the new taskbar functionality alone is worth the upgrade from XP and Vista.

I think it is worth it.

It is good that you are upgrading to Windows 7 from Windows XP. It adds great functionality and also requires less computer power than other operating system. The only thing you have to do is that you must take backup of files or use a migration tool such as Windows 7 Easy Transfer.

I have heard about the functionality of Windows 7. I have no personal experience, I still have XP. As to Windows 7 using fewer resources, I am not sure how much of an advantage that is. XP may use more resources, but it still uses far fewer resources than what the computer possesses. With Windows XP, I have never found resources to be the problem.

I have no plans to upgrade to Windows 7. However, when I buy a new computer, I will buy it with Windows 7. This is in contrast to Vista. I bought a computer two years ago, and I specifically told the computer shop to put XP on it; I didn’t want Vista (there are so many horror stories about it).

As to transferring data from the old computer, I simply pay the computer shop 50 $ to do that for me.

Yeah Windows XP which I've had for 7 years works good enough for me. IF something ain't broke why would you want to "fix" it?

Technology advances basically. XP is ten years old, you can only add on so much functionality until it becomes bloated and difficult to build on.

I can see that - my previous remark was a little "tongue in cheek"- as an old codger I'll probably never progress beyond using it to do email, on line banking, checking the news and hockey and googling the odd thing that baffles me...................

Well I have XP here at work, Vista at home, and my mom just got a laptop with 7 on it. I haven't dabbled around in 7 much (maybe 2 or 3 minutes navigating it) but it seems quite similar to Vista.

I personally prefer Vista over XP, as the computer I bought not too long ago came with it, and I haven't had any issues with performance. Sure all the "Are you sure you want to do this?" "Do you wish to allow this as administrator" BS does get a bit tiresome.... but other then that, it works just fine for me. I have had less issues with drivers and updates on Vista compared to XP, which had a hell of a time trying to figure out what my Mp3 player was.

But as I heard, Windows 7 uses as much resources as XP (or close to) and if it's similar to Vista, then I don't see why one wouldn't upgrade to 7.

Of course perhaps the reason why Vista runs fine for me is because I got 4 CPUs in my tower to run it. :p

I'm running XP and my wife is using Vista. My next operating system will be linix. I've had a backup computer with Ubunto for almost a year now and I know there will be a bit of inconvenience with some software but I expect a smooth transition to Linix. To hell with Gates and the horse he rode in on. The only way I will get another Microsoft O.S. is if I buy a computer with the O.S. already in it
