Dear members,
Good time and good day.

While I write on my laptop, the pointer jumps every now and then, some non-intentional selection happens, then with any following letter typing, all the selected portion will be deleted.

My laptop is DELL - INSPIRON.

Some of my fingers while writing may unintentionally come on the touch pad, which causes such trouble.

I tried to make use of the control panel in order to disable the touch pad; but only uselessly.

Anyone may have any idea about a solution to this situation?

Best regards.

Well, based on my experience with 3 different laptops, I'd take it to the nearest recycling depot and leave it there. Then, get a real computer. Sorry, it's a prejudiced opinion...haven't met a laptop yet that works consistently well.

But then, that's just me experience.

Well, CB, my Toshiba 'notebook' is a gift from the Universe and I love it.

Thank you; I have received your idea; but I seek after some other solutions.

Same thing happens with me from time to time. However, I find it is the base of my palm that causes the problem. I try to keep my palms spread away from the touchpad as much as possible. I rarely use the TP anyway, preferring my optical mouse. I have a Toshiba notebook so any instructions I might get on disabling the pad probably would not apply to your Dell.

Good luck with finding help.

Good luck for you too.
The base of the palm or the thumbs may be the cause. I also do use the optical mouse.

One of the funniest stories I heard recently was from a guy studying in groups (for his MBA)...they all sit side by side with their laptops and wireless mice, happy little beavers...one of the guys pulled the stick (the one that communicates with the mouse) out from his buddy's computer, and replaced it with his own...every time his buddy tried to do something, he'd move the mouse and click on things...his buddy went nuts trying to figure out what happened to his computer, why he couldn't control his mouse!

Hi Eanassir, first is the Laptop ( for the sake of quickness ) using "Synaptics" TouchPad drivers ?

I had the same issue with my Laptop and installed the driver from the manufacturer web site. It gave me a Task Bar icon that had much better user interface control..

Of course mine is a Synaptics which seems to be the biggest maker of Touch Pads for laptops at this time.. If that is the case you may want to look at downloading not only the drivers but Task Bar software to assist you with the device..

So - Is that the likely reason that at times I can type a whole letter and then have it suddenly disappear and I don't even know what I have done? I don't even know what I touch that makes my computer start "typing" in French (in a slight manner of speaking). It's like I have a french keyboard all of a sudden. Then again there are times that I don't know what I hit but my screen is blue like I wanted everything highlighted and if I don't notice that before I hit the next key - my whole letter/post is gone. I have a Toshiba lap top.

I've had similar difficulties with laptops, and found it's usually due to inadvertently brushing the touchpad surface with one of my thumbs. There should be a Mouse applet in the Control Panel that'll let you disable it, and some laptops have a little button on them that'll let you turn it off directly. I always disable touchpads now, and plug in a mouse, I find touchpads very frustrating to use, and it gives me cramps in my hands very quickly. I have an Inspiron (actually it's my daughter's) running Vista, and the Control Panel's Mouse applet does have a checkbox to disable the touchpad. Can't say anything specific about XP, I don't have a laptop running XP to look at, but I'd assume the same option must be there somewhere.

I am also running Vista and with your directions, I have now dis-abled the touch pad. I use a mouse. I hate the touch pad. So does my husband so I'll ask him if he wants his dis-abled when he gets home from work. I sure hope it helps my typing. Do you find yours seems to skip? That 's the only way I know how to describe it. On these forums I often find that I am typing several letters ahead of what's showing which is a little disconcerting since it leaves you wondering where you are in a word. It started to happen as I started to type this but now it's gone. Maybe dis-abling the touch pad fixed that too. It will probably take me a couple of days to find out for sure. Have to make one more batch of fudge and hit the kip so cannot work on it tonight. Butter Tarts and Fudge tonight. Shortbread tomorrow night. Thanks for your help.

Hi Francis2004,
we have disabled the touch pad after the reinstallation.
