Why hijack a thread when I can spin another?

Really, I have no idea what goes on in FRED. I know you can't turn it on by blowing in its ear. You can't turn it off by calling it nasty names. User friendly doesn't mean you can pick it up and toss it out the window ... and CTRL/ALT/DEL doesn't fix everything. In an emergency ... yank the plug. I've heard lots about Firefox. It's on here. My kids, grand daughter and a couple of feminine guests used it. I don't like the graphics ... but it IS faster. Now ... if I could only move Faves' contents into Bookmark.

I have umpteen versions of antiviral spyware kryptonite in here (of which none seem to work) - and not one box of kneenix to be found. I have as many variants of keystroke logger, dialer and downloader as there are curses to describe them. Pornsites? Where in Hell do they come from. Then, there's things in here that I can't even imagine what they do. I mean ... WTF is a Zlob? A hammer.... A nice ten-pound sledge ... right smack dam in the middle of its plastic and solder heart....

Thanks for the inspiation Twila....

Hi Lone;

You use keystroke logger, dialer and downloader, or you are cursed with them??

If cursed, how do you know you have them? Some program to run to find out?

Just curious, as I'm pretty non techie.

Thanks,

Nugg.

I don't use any of that crap ... and can really only guess what it is. A lot of wierd stuff flashed on the screen while the spybot was scanning. A friend told me I probably don't have them ... it was likely the search program announcing what it was looking for. What did come up was trojans (not the condom variety methinks) virtumonde, zlob-downloader, smitfraud and a whole lot of other stuff that's not supposed to be here. Geeks2Go has some free oak stakes, silver crosses and kryptonite ... so we exorcised some of them. The rest of FRED's slowness is probably arthritis....

:angry3:......Yah, kind of a pain in the butt, ain't it. Old hybrid NEC/HP/Custom tower, here has slowed down considerably in the last year or two. AVG tells me not to worry, no nasties hanging about that haven't been sent to the virus jail. My luck they'll get out using the "faint hope" clause.

I do carry a lot of stuff on the desktop, and am told that will slow things down a bit. The worry is that one becomes one of those way stations used in WWW to carry on nefarious activities without knowing it..........

So far, speed is not as slow as my old dial-up, so, mehhhhhhh. whatever.

Watch what you keep in your systems tray. That's the little icons you see at the bottom of your screen to the right. You need some of these programs running at all times (like your virus protection) but chances are there may be one or two that appear there and are not needed. They will slow your system down because they continually run in the background. I'm not sure the icons directly on your desktop will slow your system down because they are simply shortcuts to the actual program.

On startup I have to close down 4 or 5 programs in my systems tray. I don't need MSN, Winamp, PDF Writer and others running all the time.

Now, if someone can tell me how to shut these programs down permanently until I need them I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm using Windows XP and can't find that function in my Control Panel.

I have been getting ballsier - and even went into safe mode the other day to play with something-or-other. I'll graciously accept (well, kinda anyhow) this aging human memory isn't as good ol' FRED's ... so the ultimate back-up (in lieu of a printer I can get running) is the hand-written steps. Sounds like an AA thing, right? Can anyone blame my caution? I still remember that horrible day my ancient laptop (the size of a tower) and monitor combination (why do you think the laptop was five bucks at a yardsale?) just up and died. It was loaded with a gazillion things I didn't want or need. Imagine my surprise to discover auto.exe had nothing to do with a car industry game....
