I'm still having issues with this virus.

I've used AVG, doesn't find it. I've used search and destroy, doesn't find it. Can't update either of them currently because of this virus.

So Hijackthis was recommended. I can't figure it out. It tells me to keep a log of what it finds to submit to a malware specialist. I don't know any.

Is anyone here familiar with this and willing to help?

I had a virus a couple of years ago. The only way I got rid of it was with a program called Vundo Fix. I think it was created by a cracker. It was scary as hell to use but it worked. Not sure if it can help with this. You might want to google and see if it can be useful.

Go to Firefox/Mozilla, it's free. Try the ubuntu forum.
Nothing to lose, everything to gain.
Really.
Best of luck to you.

Using Firefox is a good recommendation but it won't fix her problem.

Twila, at the scan result page there should be an option to save the results as a text file. If you can figure that out, post the results and I'll take a look at it.

Give "NoScript" a try.

These are entries that I consider to be suspect:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.toggle.com/index.php?rvs=hompag

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {A057A204-BACC-4D26-9990-79A187E2698E} - (no file)

You also have some entries that look like they could be masquerading as legit windows services. Research I did on a couple point to a possible Vundu virus.

Try running this tool and see if it finds anything: http://vundofix.atribune.org/

Can you get `shared users` to work?
I've had problems and this has worked....
Someone has to know how to solve this problem!

What do you mean by 'shared users"?

Twila has a spyware/virus/trojan problem. The only way to fix it is via removal tool or format the hard drive, which is the only for sure way to do it.

Can't she allow you access to her system so you personally can follow her log to see where this occurred?
You can do this world wide with Canonical/Ubuntu?

ohhh, remote access. She probably could enable that but my work firewall won't allow traffic out on that port.

No access. Hmmm....
Perhaps a reset then a restart.
Or go to the synaptic manager.....find out what is out of whack?

If she is going to pull a complete shut-down and re-start she should save every file to CD/DVD before and then dump the trash.
If that doesn't work it's either an HD or system failure caused by the virus.
Seems to be a gnarly one...and she is not the only one in trouble.

I have always made a practice of saving my files to either floppy or CD/DVD disks and leaving the desktop empty.

.....but that's just me.

Hopefully that tool I liked for her will clear her mess up, format a drive and reinstalling isn't always a fun time for people.

I usually keep a clean image of my OS, if the system becomes messed up I just re-image it and I'm good to go.

Good thinking!
