You can't have too much RAM...
Fill all available RAM slots with as much RAM as you can afford.
I'd recommend an SCSI or alternative fixed storage medium if you intend to do a lot of editing. Transfer speed is far more important than simple capacity. The larger and faster the better is a good rule of thumb for any kind of exhaustive editing process.

Juan,
A couple things you will want to know before buying additional hardrive space and RAM
1. SATA Or IDE ( I would imagine you have sata inputs if you running a new pc)
2. Speed, make sure the drive is 7200rpm
3. Cache Size, 16mb is good if you are doing a lot of read/write
4. RAM, I recall you have a Pentium D? I belive PD's take DDR2 at a maximun of 800hmz. Check the guide for you motherboard, if you put in 4x500mb sticks. the motherboard many not be able to run in duel channel, which basically doubles the memory bandwidth.
5. RAM, if possible, make sure the RAM is of the same brand and spec. You could have 4 different sticks of DDR800, but they may run at different timings.
MikeyDB mentioned a SCSI drive, that would be consider the "high end" of things, if you need absolute performance, look into a Western Digital Raptor, which run at 10,000 RPM, same speed as a SCSI, but it has Serial ATA connections.

Wouldn't you know it. I have yet another type of DDR RAM. I have four DDR2 slots, two yellow and two orange. Right now I have one 1 gig RAM card installed. I have to have either two or four to activate the dual channel memory.
I won't be getting a SCSI drive. On the new computer I have two sata and one IDE space.
. My wife and I were both running windows 98 and the change to XP is about $250 dollars per computer. I couldn't use the upgrade version because I couldn't install win 98 in the new computer. Do you know anything about purchasing an extra licence from MS that gives you another XP installation and if it saves a bit of money? Staples didn't know what I was talking about.

If you download an exact clone of a DVD movie, you will be looking at about 4.5bg. You could download dvd rips also, which are about 700-800mb

It sounds as though you want to play it back on a settop dvd player Juan, check the format - mpeg4/h264 will at present only play back on a computer and as DurkaDurka said, about 700megabyte. The commercial dvd format employs an mpeg2 format and that will need 4.5 gigabyte.
Frankly the amount of RAM you will need is minimal - I have been into writing homemovies to DVD for the past 4 years and have done it successfully with 1-2gigabyte of RAM - HDD read should be about 7megs/sec - you do not need a scsi drive - the latest 7200 HDD's are ample combined with a decent buffer, decoding will to a large extent depend on CPU speed and will be more important with h264/mpeg4 than mpeg2. I've converted a home movie to h264 code and it plays well on an iPod. Win 98 is a dog - used it before XP, and never really optimized for movies, it could do it, have been there, done it and got the t-shirt, but would never use it again.

Too bad OS software wasn't more like the retail business... Windows would probably sell for like $50 bucks, and actually have a feature to let you get additional copies for less.

Here's another dumb question. I can only use XP on one computer.......what if that computer dies? Can I install my XP again on a new computer?

Yes, you would be able to install XP on a new pc. You might have to call microsoft and have them reset the serial number though, as it would be tied to your previous machine.

BitTornado is a good torrent client.
I imagine you have heard or some of the bittorent search engines?
One thing to keep in mind when you are downloading torrents... cap your uploads to 35KB/s , otherwise your upload will be maxed, which will prevent you from doing anything else with your internet connection.
