Does anyone know how to setup gaim or kopete to work with shaw instant messenger? Or even a console client (SIP/SIMPLE protocol)? The only thing I have been able to find that is even remotely close is a presence user agent here http://pua-pl.berlios.de/ Maybe it's too new? Or maybe I'm just too tired.

Shaw does say it's possible but I can't seem to find a client. This is what the FAQ at shaw has to say about it.

5. Can Macintosh or Linux users use Shaw Messenger?
The Shaw Messenger software only works on Microsoft Windows, however Macintosh and Linux users are welcome to use third party SIP/SIMPLE software, which is compatible with the Shaw Messenger system. To connect to the Shaw Messenger system, SIP/SIMPLE software users will need to provide the following three pieces of information when configuring their software:

* SIP ID: The part of your Shaw e-mail address before "@shaw.ca"
* Domain: shaw.ca
* SIP Proxy/Registrar: sipproxy.shaw.ca

Note: Shaw is unable to provide technical support for users of third party SIP/SIMPLE software.

After a very late night googling, I came up with PhoneGaim http://www.phonegaim.com/ and Gaim-vv http://gaim-vv.sourceforge.net/
PhoneGaim was a source of frustration almost from the moment I found it. It would seem that it's been developed by Linspire developers, which would probably be alright, except they offer two builds one using Linsprire's propritary package installer and a free windows? version. Source is available, but fails ./configure badly. Claims it can't find GTK+ . Doesn't seem like Linspire really wants to share this very much.
Gaim-vv seems like it may be more promising, I got the "autopackage" downloads (uses a shell script to install) but they complained about my system (Mandriva 10.2) so I'm about to compile the source.
