Too many connections

I am pulling out my hair with a computer problem. Hoping someone has a magic solution.

When I try to upload large files to the internet via FTP they always end up failed. Sometimes it says it was blocked, sometimes disconnected from the server etc. It usually starts out ok and transfers some files but after a few minutes it stops. I've tried different FTP programs and get the same result. I am the only one with this problem. Third parties are able to upload to the server without a problem.

I have tried closing every program on my PC.

I have anti-virus stuff installed.

Also, I have one person at a different site telling me that my IP is "Port Flooding" their site. I am sure the two are related.

What do I do to rectify IP Port Flooding? Is it related to the FTP problem?

I have windows 7.

Any wisdom is appreciated.

Only thing I can think of off hand is to make sure your FTP software is set for Passive mode.

Yes it is passive mode.

Hmmm. You can try downloading active ports to see what is opening all those connections.

Yeah you can monitor open ports with Resource Monitor under the Network tab (get there through Control Panel Administrative Tools then Performance Monitor).

But I think Active Ports is better, so I would still give it a try.

I can see them but don't what to think of it or what to do about it. I get about 10-15 open ports per web browser. Is that a lot? It seems all are listed as port 80 if that means anything.

What is your provider's max upload size limit?

I don't know. It is Telus and haven't had the issue before.

Telus is my home IP. The web server is dedicated elsewhere and they have looked from their end and is not a server issue.

Are you compressing? Have your tried an IMG?

for just one file transfer, try turning OFF your windows firewall and anyother firewall settings,

I'm not saying this is the problem, I just think it would be a good way to determine if it is a firewall problem

also, try contacting the admin for the server you are trying to upload to, they have the skills to help you, and probably would want to, as well.

FTP traffic in PASV mode would be on port 21 and another "data" port, usually around 1026-ish. Which FTP programs have you tried? CuteFTP and WSFTP are two fairly simple and reliable ones.

Thanks you guys. I turned off my firewall (Macafee) and was able to FTP without interruption.

Ah.... well coming in late, I had a number of issues with various FTP programs, where they'd either hang or just not upload. The only FTP program I never had any issues with was the FTP program in Adobe Dreamweaver (originally Macromedia, which worked just as well obviously)

For some reason it just seemed more stable then most other FTP programs.... quicker too.

I would uninstall it completely, McAfee and Symantec are bloated pigs. Windows firewall and AVG works pretty good for me.

I use filezilla to upload to ftp and have never had an issue - very straight forward software.

lol it's so often the obvious solutions that work.

You should be able to set your firewall to allow FTP, but I'm not familiar with MacAfee specifically. I'm sure someone here will know.

you are welcomed. Now you can probably turn macafee back on while you are transfering and it will likely configure to accept the FTP connection.
