Some glaciers on Asia's Karakoram mountains are defying the global trend and getting thicker, say researchers.

A French team used satellite data to show that glaciers in part of the Karakoram range, to the west of the Himalayan region, are putting on mass.

The reason is unclear, as glaciers in other parts of the Himalayas are losing mass - which also is the global trend.

The region's glaciers are poorly studied, yet provide a vital water source for more than a billion people.

The response of Himalayan glaciers to global warming has been a hot topic ever since the 2007 report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which contained the erroneous claim that ice from most of the region could disappear by 2035.

It'll be interesting to see why one cold region is accumulating ice when other cold regions are losing ice.
"Why this should be is not clear, though it is well known from studies in other parts of the world that climate change can cause extra precipitation into cold regions which, if they are cold enough, gets added to the existing mass of ice."
"Right now we believe that it could be due to a very specific regional climate over Karakoram because there have been meteorological measurements showing increased winter precipitation; but that's just a guess at this stage."

So you think all the melting ice is being rerouted to Karakoram? But they said it was only marginally accumulating ice.

Do you think warm air is displacing cold air and cold air displacing warm air making one region colder than the other making glaciers pack on ice?

All this talk of climate change bores me. People don't emit GHGs, cars and factories do. So govts must pass laws to force corporations to emit fewer GHGs when they produce cars in factories.

People don't make cars, corporations make cars. Recycling is nice, kind of like winning the President's Trophy which the Canucks just won, but that trophy is meaningless. A carbon tax doesn't reduce carbon because drivers don't produce pollution, cars produce pollution. Carbon tax credits are a fraud, sold by people in their basements over the net.

The changes are due to natural events that have been going on for millions of years. When our North Pole was tropical somewhere else had the ice, it has all happened before.

I like it, we won't worry. Things always change.

You don't use any? 77% of your energy needs are used to survive winter and stay clean. Should you wear thicker sweaters and stop washing?

You're getting a little mixed up. We use energy but we do not MANUFACTURE the products we use. Corporations manufacture products that emit GHGs that cause acid rain. Consumers buy, they do not manufacture and emit. I think it's a fascinating insight, you should enjoy it and lose a bit of guilt.

industry does not even come close to using what it takes for the population of Canada to survive.

If you're so worried about industry, you may have a reason. But focus your efforts on govt and industry, not the general public. The general public manufactures nothing.

Canada will do fine no matter what, countries like Bangladesh are hooped, especially if the oceans rise.

I don't know about you but I try to make more general public everyday.

So you really think that all the water from the melted ice in other areas of the planet precipitate down on Karakorum? lol The ice there should be accumulating like crazy then. Yet according to the researchers it is only accumulating minimally.

What happened to cow farts in this argument? And people farts? There are more people than cows after all.

And perhaps corporations produce polluting vehicles but people burn fuel to run those vehicles. people have just as much responsibility as corporations. Saying this is a natural phenomenon is just silly. It may be partly part of natural cycles but at no time has the Earth experienced the consumption of such vast amounts of resources or the production of vast amounts of toxic waste, To say humans have no affect on the outcome is, to me, burying your head up your butt.
