A group called the International Association of Exorcists has been formally recognized by the Vatican.
Consisting of 250 priests in 30 countries, the association's approval gives members legal authority to perform exorcisms, the Vatican's daily newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, reported Tuesday.
"Exorcism is a form of charity that benefits those who suffer," the head of the International Association of Exorcists, Rev. Frances Bamonte, told the paper.
Pope Francis, more than his recent predecessors, has not be shy about personifying Satan and evil.
Last year, video footage showed the Pope laying his hands on a boy and saying a prayer before the boy quickly slumped. At the time, experts said it appeared to be a prayer of liberation from the devil.

Some 40 Catholic bishops from various dioceses in Mexico are attending an "intensive" excorism seminar this week at the Pontifical University of Mexico, according to university rector Mario Flores Angel Ramos.

The bishops will be trained in how to perform exorcisms, which are "a reality in our society and it should be addressed from a biblical, theologic perspective with psychiatric aspects," according to Ramos.

Italian Bishop Sante Babolin, who is leading the training along with a theologian and a psychiatrist, said he has conducted 1,650 exorcisms on 150 people (each case demands a series of exorcisms). He has succeeded 50 times, he said.

Exorcisms, the cleansing of demons from a person or area, are ancient parts of several religions. In Catholicism, exorcisms are church-sanctioned — though rarely talked about — rituals done in the name of Jesus Christ.

Mexico has been described recently in the press as a country where exorcisms are on the rise. But Babolin said not everyone who thinks they need an exorcism really does.

"Of every 100 people who believe they need an exorcism, only 2.4 percent are found to be authentic cases," he said. "The rest are just bothered souls."

Pope Francis drew headlines not long ago for being caught on tape performing an exorcism, and earlier this week, the Vatican endorsed the International Association of Exorcists, which has 250 members from 30 countries.

A pastor in Nicaragua and four of his followers were handed down 30-year prison sentences for burning a 25-year-old woman alive in an exorcism ritual, allegedly to free her from demons

The suffering that [Vilma] Trujillo was subjected to is something no human being should go through," judge Alfredo Silva said, according to BBC News on Wednesday.

Trujillo was killed back in February after she was stripped naked, tied up, and thrown into a fire, reports have said.

Trujillo, a mother of two, suffered burns to 80 percent of her body in the ritual, and was dumped at a river bank before she was discovered by her 15-year-old sister and rushed to a hospital in Managua. The woman spent several days in critical condition, but died from her injuries.

Pastor Juan Gregorio Rocha Romero has denied wrongdoing and claimed that his followers successfully exorcised Trujillo inside their church, arguing that she had been possessed by demons and had allegedly tried to attack people with a machete.

Pablo Cuevas, a spokesman for Nicaragua's Human Rights Commission, accused some citizens of trying to "take justice into their own hands."

"It is incredible that these things can happen today, there has to be a review by the authorities into all the different denominations and religions," Cuevas said. "We can't have things like this happening."

The CIA World Factbook shows that 58.5 percent of the country's population belongs to the Roman Catholic Church, with another 21.6 percent identifying as evangelicals.
