Pot activist smokes joint in House of Commons - CTV News

The faint whiff of marijuana smoke wafted through the air of the House of Commons Monday when a pot activist lit up a joint as Parliamentarians traded barbs during Question Period.

Samuel Mellace took "seven or eight" tokes from his spliff before a security officer "came over and told me to put it out." A glassy-eyed Mellace later told reporters that he left the House of his own volition and "was not escorted off the property."

Mellace lit up in the House's public gallery to protest the fact that Canada's Marijuana Medical Access Regulations (MMAR) don't include exemptions for alternatives to smoked marijuana, such as creams or food product like butter.

Mellace is among 5,000 Canadians who have permission from the federal government to use medical marijuana. In his case, Mellace smokes to alleviate symptoms from previous leukemia treatments and chronic pain from injuries he suffered in a car accident.

Mellace's wife suffers from lung cancer and cannot smoke, and gets relief by using marijuana in other forms.

But Mellace says despite being an authorized grower for both himself and his wife, the MMAR do not protect him unless they light up.

"My wife can't smoke her medication because she has lung cancer, so I make the butter and smoothies," Mellace said in a news release issued prior to his stunt. "It's ridiculous to think that I could go to jail for easing my wife's suffering."

Mellace said he was also trying to draw attention to delays in processing medical marijuana applications. He said his wife had to wait 10 months for her authorization renewal, despite submitting her paperwork eight weeks prior to the expiration of her previous permit.

Mellace said he could not give his wife medical marijuana without facing a jail term because her authorization had expired.
There was no immediate reaction from the government or opposition MPs to the stunt.

Good way to do it..... he should light up one every day in question period and if they do something about it.... take them to court and finally challenge the laws.

Though I think sparking up a dube in the House was a stupid thing to do, sometimes ya just gotta stoop to the House's level....
Pipe a pound worth of smoke into the ventilation intake. Perhaps getting those clowns high would change things in a hurry. But don't forget to bring in a truck load of munchies. Wouldn't want to start a riot.

Hmm... the stuff makes me feel like my heart is racing out of control, I can't imagine what that could do to a bunch of 'heart attacks waiting to happen' if they weren't expecting it.

Might solve even more problems. (I was being facetious)

Not everybody reacts that way, The majority of users experience quite the opposite. Besides, smoking is not the only way to use the stuff for medicinal purposes. In fact it is the worst.

Eating it is the best - followed by vapour. Tokers are mainly about the buzz. Hell, it's just God's way of saying "HI!" anyhow. I object to the fact that I have to go see people by night with whom I would want no association by day just to get a medicine that doesn't have all the nasty shyte effects that the doctor-stuff that owned me had.

Yup! With California legalizing the stuff it is going to be harder and harder to keep up this stupid war on Pot.

War on a herb. Makes no sense. This activist did the right think to make pot legal in Canada. Pot, like TNT, chemicals and tobacco are dangerous substances, so they have to be regulated for public safety. Making them illegal is simply not effective and does nothing to limit supply or demand.

Perhaps we should make sure our elected officials get a supply of pot
and they wouldn't be inclined to make our lives more difficult in the
future. Think about it, every decision would be one toke away, as long
as they don't inhale.

It would be a big improvement over the cocaine they are doing now. Coke is the drug of choice for ego maniacs.
