First and foremost, it seems a reminder is due that the travel plans of the Governor General tend to be on the recommendation of the
Office of the Prime Minister. When travelling abroad, Her Excellency has done an incredible job of representing Canadians and communicating a truly Canadian message of peace, co-operation, understanding and respect for rights and freedoms. It should also be noted that State visits abroad account for only a very small part of the Governor General’s mandate; a vast majority of the Governor General’s time is spent travelling around Canada and communicating with all of us to “break down solitudes” (as has been Her Excellency’s mission since being appointed).
Our Governor General took the extraordinary, and perhaps revolutionary, step of creating a blogging and forum website for Canadians to get closer to the Office of the Governor General (it can be accessed at
CitizenVoices.GG.ca,
--). Her Excellency has arguably spent more time than any past governors general getting to know Canadians and promoting our culture and heritage, and for this the Governor General should be most generously applauded. One of the Governor General’s first steps upon appointment was to plan visits to each of the provinces; Her Excellency has also addressed our own
Legislative Assembly here in
British Columbia and carried out similar engagements throughout the rest of the country.
We have a Governor General now who Canadians can relate to, engage, and trust.
