How to counter big government on both sides of the political spectrum?

It seems that both the right and the left are often oblivious to their own brand of big government while criticizing the opposition's brand. The left will often point to excessive spending on the military for example, while supporting increased spending on 'job creation programmes'. Meanwile, the right will criticize the left's 'job creation progammes' and such while bloating the military and such beyond all need.

How do we get both sides to recognize that they're both equally in favour of big government, just in different ways, and to get them to work together to cut government spending on pet projects on both sides of the spectrum?

In this regard I think we are waging a losing battle right from the getgo. Sadly intelligent people aren't attracted to politics and unintelligent people are inherently oblivious. I know we have been encouraged to use our right to vote because many people have waged a long battle to get that right. But on the other side of the coin voting just seems to encourage them (in their selfish and greedy ways).
