Is Tommy Douglas Still That Subversive?

CSIS, the semi-secret agency that watches over all of us for our own good, has refused to release its files on Tommy Douglas in spite of the fact that the man who was voted "The Greatest Canadian" in a CBC program has been dead for 24 years. No doubt his subversive influence lives on in spite of the fact that he no longer actively participates in politics. CSIS refused to release the file in spite of the fact that it was obliged to do so under the Freedom of Information Act. So much for open government and Canadian democracy.

You still have delusions of living in a democracy?

An ex-CSIS member once told me that CSIS couldn't find their own hand. They probably don't want to release the files because it would expose their incompetence.

I don't believe CSIS even existed then....it would have been the RCMP.....who couldn't find their arsehole with both hands.

The man is dead, this crap happened 40 years ago, anyone concerned is old or deceased....give it UP boys....

I would sympathize if there was established a specific time line for release, say 50 years....but to just refuse is outrageous....

Maybe they had some reliable intel that his son-in-law was a hippie Sherman tank commander trying to steal gold bars back from the Germans, or that his grandson was an agent working for a secret American counter terrorizm agency :lol::lol:

Hi Bob,
Do you like 24 also? It's one of our favourite shows.

I'd bet that's what it's really about. The file will reveal what an incredible waste of time and resources were devoted to monitoring the activities of what a letter writer in today's Globe&Mail described as being a "transparently decent man." The officers involved aren't all dead yet, they don't want to embarrass them... It's about saving face, not national security.

And I'd give odds you're right. RCMP has egg on its face as it is these days, the last thing they want is new eggs to cover the rotting, old ones.
