While I have no love lost for any senator this was really sad..

Watching the interview I could only wonder how many drinks Duffy was putting on our Senate Tab.. I am sure this embarassment will stick with him for a while..

Appointing Duffy, possibly the best thing Harper could have done to raise support for Senate reform. Though unintentional.

It would be a reasonable expectation, given this performance by The Honourable Senator Michael Duffy (Cavendish), for the senator to resign his seat (or at the very least, for Her Majesty’s Government for Canada in the Senate to remove the senator from its caucus). The Honourable the Senate of Canada, as an institution, should be extremely concerned at the public perception that this senator may have created through his impropriety, and steps should be taken to distance the Parliament of Canada from this particular member (perhaps a motion of censure would be in order).

Let’s be clear on the point of expenses, though, that there are rational and entirely appropriate reasons for the expenses of honourable senators to be higher than those of their elected counterparts. Members of the House of Commons represent only a single electoral district, whereas honourable senators* each represent an entire province. The greater travel costs alone, for senators, would necessitate a higher expense line. For the Senate to perform the functions that it is constitutionally charged to perform, and for regional interests to be effectively represented, these expenses are entirely justified.

(*Except for Québec senators, as they each represent one of twenty-four “senatorial districts”.)

WHAT impropriety???? He defended himself against accusations and made a vocal (and vicious) public attack on his accusser. So what?????????????????????????

He didn't punch him in the face, bite his nose off, or even pee on his leg......nor did he threaten the man.......he just engaged in a nasty little slap-down.

Not pretty, but hardly reason for resignation.

Duffy said it right when he said the senate in in the constitution.

Canada enjoys an unelected senate and they should keep it that way.

The cost of the last federal election $300 million if you add an elected senate that would be an additional $300 million.

It it ain't broken then you don't have to fix it.

So, has anyone asked PEI, the constituents that Duffy represents, how they feel about this? They don't exactly have the choice of fixing it if they feel it needs fixing, do they?

The system is the way it is because the Liberals and NDP insisted it be this way. Drunk or not, Duffy has a good point. The other guys shouldn't be bellyaching about the way the system is.

Seeing what the Senate is - has become - anyone who accepts a Senate appointment must be sadly lacking in self-esteem, honesty and patriotism.

Jean Belivue turned down what Frank Mahovlich did not have the nerve and self-rrespect to turn down. Neither did Duffy, who lost all his credibility as a reporter, by accepting it.

The Canadian Senate is nothing more or less than a retirement bonanza for those who have not been able to achieve anything on their own merit.
