Why is Flaherty warning against delaying the budget?

Liberals are ready to support it?

So what is the hold up?

Are we facing MORE House of Commons antics?

Please, I think we are for the most part, tired of all this political posturing when the parties agree on legislation to be pass.

Regardless of whom is holding this up, Conservatives or Liberals ( done alphabetical ), I hope this gets voter visibility for the next election. Time for our politicians to be accountable..

Finance Minister Jim Flaherty says the country's economy is in too much trouble to allow partisan debates to delay implementation of the federal government's $40-billion stimulus package.

In a combative performance before the House finance committee Monday, Flaherty said parliament must pass the budget he tabled last month before April or risk setting the economic recovery back.
"The first step is to adopt this bill quickly," he said. "This is not a time for business as usual."

Afterwards he told reporters that Canada was being hobbled by the world slowdown and frozen credit markets that has put the country's economy in a tailspin, which he said will result in thousands of jobs being lost this year.

He said the budget not only includes infrastructure spending and tax cuts, but also puts in place a new $12-billion government-led credit facility that will help free up loans to businesses to invest and create jobs.

"We need to create economic activity. We know the private sector is not doing so adequately."

Flaherty said sternly that he "expects" Canada's banks to work with Crown corporations, in particular Export Development Canada and the Business Development Bank, to ensure businesses get the credit they need to keep operating and expand.

"We have a serious access to credit problem around the world," he said. "We are going to have to as a government create more credit in the market so we can grow the economy."

It was a different Flaherty from the one that tabled an economic update only three months ago, preaching calm and proposing to cut spending in order to balance the budget. That document was dead on arrival and set off a political and constitutional crisis that took government out of action on the economy for two months.

But although he was urging quick action Monday, opposition MPs questioned whether the government is acting on its words.

Liberal finance critic John McCallum said he has been told by several business leaders that the EDC is dragging its feet on extending loans.

And NDP critic Thomas Mulcair accused Flaherty of playing politics by placing restrictions of public service increases and seeking to change pay equity rules, changes he said were ideological in nature. The minister was also grilled for repealing a provision he had previously introduced designed to stop business tax havens.

It's political gamesmanship. It's the only thing the Conservatives truly know how to do well. That's why they can never stop doing it - because otherwise everyone would see the true scope of their incompetence.

There's that and the fact that a job is being lost a minute, hence delay means more job losses.

He's just trying to plug the hole in the dyke

The delay, gamesmanship, hijinks, and general childishness in
delaying this bill is coming from the NDP & the Bloc....

Both Conservatives and Liberal MPs say the federal budget
ought to become law as soon as possible in order to stimulate
the economy with new spending and tax relief.

The NDP and Bloc Quebecois object to the federal budget
and have voted against it at every opportunity. Tuesday morning,
with the bill stuck at the Commons finance committee, NDP and
Bloc Quebecois MPs engaged in delaying tactics.

An NDP MP at one point insisted on a roll-call vote for each and
every one of the legislation's approximately 500 clauses. He later
modified that demand but then Mulcair, the lone NDP MP on the
12-member finance committee, and the two BQ MPs engaged in a
friendly question-and-answer session that ate up more time.

Check it out here (and it's not from Mr.Adler): NDP hammers Liberals over budget bill

So? They don't have enough votes to delay it

Then Flaherty should just make the comment - the NDP and Bloc are delaying it. Instead they paint the whole opposition with the same brush.

Seems to be as much an aberration of democracy as Harper shutting down Parliment. Not quite, but close

With the Liberal party working with the Conservatives on this Budget,
the opposition is the NDP & the Bloc. I though that was pretty clear...:-?

Pegger....Ya' know....You're right. I was wrong. I forgot about those two independent MPs. Those two
people have been painted with the same brush as the NDP & Bloc. :-(

I just had a thought- most of our problems in this country stem from the fact that the Gov't. handles money.
