The deficit is gone and the debt is being paid down on the back of the GST thus reducing interest paid. That debt was not only the fault of the Tories btw the Libs share over half of it.

I'm sure most people can pick out the Mulroney years from 1984 to 1993. I don't think we can blame the Liberals for half.......more like a fifth or less. You can also see that the debt started to go down immediately after the Liberals were re-elected.

Looks like more than half to me.

In percentage terms the debt increases mostly occured under Trudea from 1975 on. The Conservatives under Mulroney struggled with them and were able to get them down to about 9% a year by the end of their time in power. Then the Liberals decreased the increases until 1998 when the debt actually dropped, which it has been doing since then.

Oops sorry about your luck.

If our debt rose from something over a hundred and twenty billion dollars to just under 600 billion while bulroney was in office, who else do we blame. Maybe you need a remedial reading course.

Our debt rose from something over a hundred and twenty billion dollars to just under 600 billion in the nine years Mulroney was in office. Mulroney had a fifty or sixty billion dollar deficit every year he was in office. Is that so hard to read?

What was that spike in '78, was that the purchase of Petro-Can?

A 40% increase is not as big a dollar figure if it is from about 20M, and it depends where those funds went.

A 40% increase when the dept is 20M is not equal to the same money as 27% of 1,000M, it is less.

Liberals took it from about 20M - 1,000M, from '84-'93 it went from 1,000M to 5,250M, or 80M compared to 4,250M, you do the math.

Anybody know who bought that plane and for how much compared to what we paid for it.

If an election is on its way, and has been forever, I believe that Harper's steam would be cut to a few puffs if the Trudeau sons got into the fray. Just seems though that Margaret cannot convince Sasha. Pierre would have encouraged him and convinced him. As we are becoming one of the world's leading nations we don't need a P.M. who is in Bush's back pocket.
Not only in Bushe's pocket but the Canadian tax payers have footed the bill for Harpers knee pads.

Narrow focus of Mulroney-Schreiber inquiry, adviser recommends

The judicial inquiry into the cash payments accepted by former prime minister Brian Mulroney should employ “alternative means” and shouldn't rely on public, courtroom-style hearings, a special adviser to Prime Minister Stephen Harper has recommended.

Prof. Johnston didn't rule out public hearings altogether, noting that some aspects “should be fully ventilated in a public proceeding.” But he encouraged the yet-to-be selected commissioner to uncover the truth with “more efficient” approaches, such as “confidential interviews” and a special “commission dossier,” that have been used in recent Canadian inquiries.

And so the dance has begun again.
Prof. Johnston by Harper appointed - Harper a close friend of Mulrooney - I smell a rat!!
