I don’t smoke I never head and I enjoy smoke free bars but I think the ban on smoking in public places is stupid. Lots of people like to do it and who are we tell them they can’t light up. Sure we want smoke free places to go to but why should we stop people from doing what they like especially if we could get a big tax grab out of it.

Here is my thought. Clubs bars and restaurants that allow smoking should pay a licensing fee and the fee should be big enough so at least half the clubs choose to stay smoke free. Next there though be ventilation requirements in the licensed clubs as well as requirements for gas detectors and if the amount of smoke exceeds some threshold fines on top of the licensing fee then fines will be levied.

See why ban it if instead we can let people go out have fun and enjoy themselves well the government collects big money reducing the need for income tax. Another point I would like to make is I’d rather people smoke indoors where the air can be filtered then walking down the street where it can blow in my face.

Manitoba got rid of it years ago.

Its called second-hand smoking.

People die from it.

Its not just a "irritating habit"

I don't want that stuff near me, and noone else should feel pressured by smoking friends to go to a smoke-friendly establishment.

Well smoking is not good for you the risks of smoking are highly exaggerated. Besides if people are more likely to choose a smoke-friendly establishment then one that isn’t it odd that they are shutting them down. Talk about political correctness gone wrong.

My media might be out of sync then.

I grew up with all those horrid commercials about second hand smoking and smoking.

And in school they drilled it into us about it.

I had a big battle with my mother a few years ago when I found out she was a closet smoker, because I have it so drilled in to me from school and television about smoking.

It is the same argument as seatbelts and motorcycle helmets, essentially the governement is trying to save people from themsleves. The problem is humans are not rational, and will do all those bad things like smoking because of no other reason than they want to. I choose not to smoke, my experiece with friends who currently smoke is yes it is highly addictive. And from older lifelong smokers i know, very harmful to your health. But those currently smoking also grew up with all the same press trying to get them to never start up, and they still did. Why i refer back to my irrational comment. I will not go to restaurants or establishments that have smoking in them, and it is forbidden in my home or car. That is a personal choice, yes i believe they should have the option. If for no other reason that it is the individuals right to make that choice, not the governments. Whether something is bad for you or not, forced (or attempted) compliance doesn't work. Remeber prohibition. Add another buck or 2 to the packs for smokers to pay for the extra medical car they'll need later on, and end this insanity that is bankrupting farmers, and ruining lives.

Smoking is a killer and people who are too dumb to realise that can stay addicted until their lungs stick together for all i care. as for public places I don't feel too strongly... it's annoying but I can move away from it and legislation is a bit much.

I have a great idea. Instead of a public smoking ban, let's have a law that forbids a smoker from smoking in the presence of any non smoker unless all non smokers waive their rights to clean air. Let's also have a law that forbids smokers from throwing their butts where ever they choose. There's nothing like the old pile of butts in the walmart parking lot from some earth loving smoker who was to weak from asthma to walk over to a garbage can.

This is a pet peeve of mine as well, and the solution is already in place. Actually have law enforcement start to enforce our laws on litter'g, after some fines start to be handed out the message will get through.

Yeah there are laws against literring.

$200 fine if I litter.

But I never have gotten caught. When driving I collect a bunch of trash and pitch it when the highway is clear.

McDonalds bags, drink cans, kleenexes, done it for years and never fined.

I also have never recycled.

I don't care, garbage can go where ever I put it.

You should let us know where you live, so we can dump all of our garbage and crap in your yard; you know, since we don't care, and garbage can go where ever we put it. No difference, right?

If I order McDonalds take-out or drink a pepsi from my cooler, I throw it out on the highway when I am done, if its safe.

I don't do it in my own town.

Just when I am on 30 minute + drives.

Agreed. In the days when I smoked (I was young and stupid once too) the butts went into the ashtray, not into the garden or out the car window. Throw a lit butt out the car window where I live, you can start a devastating prairie fire. As for McDonald's cups and Pepsi cans and other such crap... garbage is garbage, and there are right and wrong places to put it. Out the car window on the highway is always the wrong place.

So westmanguy, you don't litter your own town but you feel free to litter anyone else's space as long as it's safe? What does that mean, that there's no RCMP highway patrol officer around to catch you at it and ticket you? If you're not just pulling our legs here--and it's certainly not clear whether you are or not--and actually behave as you've described, you are not a moral man.

Change all the diamonds to something related to some other offensive act, say defecating in public and the argument is the same, the validity is unchanged as is the accuracy of the propositions. Nevertheless, it is clear that something is wrong:

I don’t defecate in public I never head and I enjoy bars where people aren't allowed to defecate on the tables but I think the ban on defecating in public places is stupid. Lots of people [would] like to do it and who are we tell them they can’t stink the place up. Sure we want stench and e-coli free places to go to but why should we stop people from doing what they like especially if we could get a big tax grab out of it.

See why ban it if instead we can let people go out have fun and enjoy themselves well the government collects big money reducing the need for income tax. Another point I would like to make is I’d rather people defecate indoors where the stench and bacteria can be filtered then walking down the street where it can blow in my face.

Also, one major problem with the solution you suggest is the discriminatory nature of it. Only successful restaurants would be able to do it. So most people would rather go to smoking bars simply for the fact that since the can afford the tariff, they are a successful bar/restaurant and should have better food and service. It would probably be struck down in court when the restaurant lobby groups fight it.

How "kind" of you to not litter your own town. Why do you feel it is OK to throw your trash out the window anywhere? Did you learn that from one of your "cut" celebrity "icons"?

westmanguy, Stand on any highway overpass and take a look down the sides, you will see tons of garbage that ended up their from like minded people. I don't think the punishment for doing this should be a fine, i'd rather see 2 full weeks community service that would see such litter bugs filling garbage bags along the side of the highways!

Choice should be restored on the issue of smoking, but i don't think only successfull establishments would benefit. I found the seperate smoking areas and rooms with high ventillation/ filter systems were fine. It left those who made the choice to smoke a place to go, and many establishments that couldn't afford the rooms simply created a much smaller fenced external patio. Buisness owners should be able to make that choice for themselves, and government should take a step back on the issue.
