Do you not think it be better to have many small political parties?

Is it not a better way for the people to be heard and at the same time would it not be better to have more than four political parties across the nation sharing are money between them. Are they working for us or working to share the money with friends? What kind of budget does each party have to spend?

Sounds a bit like Italy. A look at their political history mught be an indication.

According to Elections Canada we have more than a dozen political parties to choose from.

In every election they get a certain percentage of the vote.

Is it a good idea to have so many parties?

Just look at America they have two major political parties and they still can't get it right.

There is a lot of progressive conservatives joining the Progressive Canadian Party.

A lot of NDPers joining the Green Party of Canada.

When you can get a leader that wants to help all Canadians and treat them with honesty and integrity like the Conservatives promised but never did, then you will have a good government.

certainly a massive amount of parties would be wasteful, but some choice is important, so a two-party system (like the US) wouldn't be advisable. In the UK we have two main parties and one runner up. every now and then the runner up and the opposition swap places.

I'd rather have a functioning benevolent dictatorship. Democracies for the most part are easily corrupted and serve first the corporate and monied class and those that represent well organized special interest. Crime runs rampant and special interests co-opt the legislative arena. Soon everything is swamped in bureaucracy and drowned in paperwork. The better part of any ministry budget will first meet the needs of the machinery needed to run it. Each with its own overwhelming appetite. It all becomes farcical. Lean, mean and effective government simply can't exist in a democracy. It's owned. The fix is in. And I think any caring Canadian really is tired of it.

I would rather see proportional representation, coupled with free votes in parliament. And an end to towing the party line. The current system is getting further and further from democracy, ex. 85% of the public opposed to the GST yet we have it, after that the campaign promise of Chretien to rid us of it and that broken so brazenly.

IMO, political parties should be thrown out

And every riding vote for independents that CANNOT be affiliated with other candidates in other ridings.

And we have a second race for PMs, which is independent, but to avoid massive numbers of candidates, certain criteria must be met.

Then the PM appoints non-elected citizens to cabinet positions.

Then bills are tabled equally, and no more bs.

But then who would King Harper be able to keep from speaking to the media?

Harper already did that... his name was Michael Fortier.... on his first official day on the job... and it was a PR nightmare and reaked of a patronage appointment.

People just naturally gravitate towards political parties; even if we started again from nothing, in 15 seconds there would automatically be two new parties: one opposed to the system, and one in favour of it, and things would evolve from there.

FREE VOTES, regardless of the party system or one based strictly on independants. The intimidation and threats of the party whips, and outcasting of publically elected officials is what needs to stop. By making free votes law and enforceable with sizeable punishments, and making all bills tabled equally is the only way to fix the system. Anyone seeking to undermine democracy by coercing an official to vote under threat of job loss, violence, career suicide or political isolation is wrong. Should be treated as the criminal they are under the criminal justice system as it pertains to extortion, which is exactly what it is. The system will never be perfect, but right now it is down right broken.

Like a public opinion poll, we should have a phone in system like the television shows wanting people to vote for there favorite person.
Why can we not use the same system? Simply have two phone numbers and ask yes or no questions about important topics the majority rules. The surveys could be conducted at the end of a work day. It’s easy enough now to have coverage on the cable channels, radio stations and even the internet using a phone to answer the questions of the day.

Would this system not save us money in the end? Could we not replace the politicians with a simple phone system?
