I grew to believe the left was the greatest threat to freedom in this country over a number of years, and I was proven correct by my favourite politician, Svend Robinson.
At a debate at UNB in Fredericton over free speech and minority rights, Svend was questioned over the right of people to speak their minds. His reply?
"We have a RIGHT not to be offended".
Okay...........So you offend me, Svend, by BREATHING..........please stop.

PC is acting on what is percieved to be a perfect utopia. Diplomacy is doing your best to temper your actions while taking anothers feelings into account. That's my take on the subject.BTW,your rants piss me off most of the time,but that is the nature of the beast.Colby,I concur on your take on convicted jewel thief,wannabe pedophile, Svend. Political Correctness is used today to silence any opinion that the extreme left find offensive, usually what is said or written isn't offensive but somehow these wonkers see imaginary words that aren't there. It's how those with a Socialist mind set start their total control of the masses. They loath free speech, everything offends them. My opinion of a couple of examples:
I say "I fear extreme Islam", PC'ers see: you hate Muslims and are a racist bigot.
I say "Crime stats show more blacks are imprisoned than whites" a PC'er sees- she's calling all blacks criminals.
Most politicians have lost the ability to speak clear and concisely, instead they pontificate with long winded speeches but they say NOTHING of importance. Danny Williams is the exception, he tells it like it is not how the PC crowd see it but the truth. We need more politicians like Scrappy Danny.

it is not so much "left", "extreme left", or "right" so much as a state of lack of personal accountability.
People have found it easier to "whine" and blame somebody else for their problems.
Now I am not saying that people have not been trampled on by others, but that it is people are becoming "hypersensitive" to anything that "afronts them". This is a habituated behavior. When you learn you get a favorable result from such actions, it is reinforced, and applied to other scenarios. The "extreme" of this is the notion that "everybody" that does not behave in a way to support you is somehow hurting you.

The PC, whether you view them as Priests of Control or as Pipsqueaks and Charlatans, share one undeniable mission: the elevation of victimhood as career. The movement is intensely undemocratic and its strategies have been coercive, insensitive and brazenly singleminded. I think most thoughtful people consider the movement and its leaders and its supporters jerks. Annoying ones. The very folk that any self-respecting democracy must seek to isolate and unequivocally condemn.

The odd thing about Political correctness and offending..is that it rarely offends the people you are out to protect.
Take religon and Christmas... We are told the saying Merry Christmas..or even calling it Christmas is offensive to some....It is alway made out that the some are from other religons, however I have never found that person. I believe the one offended is the politically correct enforcers..i.e. they are offended by any religous talk or belief. I have had Jewish, Muslim and Hindu people wish me a Merry Christmas.
Am I offended by Ramadan, by seeing a Manora, by the Hindu Dwali festival..NO. They are not my religon or my culture but it is certainly not offensive...
Racial slurs are on thing, but to water down a culture to a left "wingnut " HAPPY FESTIVAL SEASON" is moronic....besides most have lost any real meaning of Christmas anyways....as the Future Shop commercial boldy states "I WANT MORE"

It's a big old lottery out there....lawsuits against companies, the government, the police... etc.

Also, ever company has a diversity program, training people how to be politically correct with different groups. I don't see it as bad. But the push is really from the corporate sector out, and it's primarily to protect market share. If those groups didn't like it they wouldn't be spending their hard earned money with those companies.

Sometimes and some places "Merry Christmas" is exclusionary. I am pagan and truly believe that the Christ Mass is a usurping of the old winter solstice Yule celebrations. In metro T.O. WASPs are a minority. What gives us the right to impose our views on others? Just because we are more numerous we are right? Does someone of non-christian beliefs have the right to raise their children in their own beliefs? What of their child who is bombarded with Christ Mass advertisements and feels left out at school by all the other kids waiting on Saint Nicklaus. Can you imagine a small child crying because he/she is left out of others games? I can and find the image very saddening. Is it so wrong to celebrate the mid-winter season as one of family values and world peace without bringing in religion? PC means to be non-exclusionary and open to the differences in us all without imposing our own views on others.

Good point - I have never thought of PC as someone's wet dream - I have thought of PC as replacing honesty in our society - being polite when one does not feel it.
I guess sometimes one has to say something appropriate however, but I don't want to fall linto a habit
of mouthing expressions when I don't mean them or because some new societal ethic dictates it....
Generally when I say Good Morning, or How Are You?, I mean it and really want to hear an answer good or bad.... if I don't have that gut feeling I smile or nod and say nothing....
I think there are good intentions behind PC but it has gone way beyond sincere which is a crack in our direct communications with people.
Then of course there are those who are going to find fault with anything one says or does.... but I mentally flip a bird and move on... leave them to their crankiness. Life does not spin on their axis.

First came removing prayer from school, then Christian symbols from Government, and if it didn't happen a suit would follow. Now we live in a society that is not so much politically correct as it is afraid to say or do anything.... and they say we should stop Bullying....We've created a whole culture around it!!!
