What are peoples thoughts on Canada being a republic? Do you see any pro's or con's to it?

I personally would like to see Canada as an entity seperate from the UK Monarchy.

May the Queen rot in hell!
And again: WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM!!!! This is completely uncalled for.

Whether or not you are a republican, the Queen carries off the most difficult job in the world with grace......I can't imagine a job worse than being a ceremonial Head -of State without actual power.

And here's the question: How do you replace the Queen as Head-of-State? Install a President? With what powers? Appointed or elected?

This is a case of simple common sense; IF IT WORKS DON'T FIX IT!

I fully support the continuance of the monarchy. In a country quickly losing any sense of its past and the huge challenges met in it, to provide it its present success and prosperity, I'm pissed at this republican nonsense. The French are able to protect their past and culture in Quebec. The English can go hang. Do I have it correct? Oh, the wonders of multiculturalism.

get rid of the Queen

why pay for a monarchy with our taxes

why pay for lieutenant govornor and general governors that also takes our tax money away for nothing

as for the french proctecting their past well at least they do not pay for extra monarchy expenses or anything like it

I might agree with you if you knew what you're talking about. We don't pay anything towards the maintenance of the British monarchy. We pay only for our Lieutenant-Governors and Governors-General, and in the scheme of things the cost is peanuts. And they don't do nothing, they do quite a lot. Ceremonial Head of State carries quite a burden, and if they didn't do it, we'd just have to pay someone else to do it, unless you want to pass it down to the Prime Minister and provincial Premiers, but they're quite busy already.

There is no problem we have that getting rid of the monarchy would solve.

No secret here, I'm a Republican, though not an extremist and I'm in no rush to rid ourselves of the monarchy I think we would be better off without it, and have an American or French Republican system put in place, or a Westminster style Republican system. Doesn't really matter.

So, we should combine the roles of Head of State and Head of Government, a' la (GASP!) the USA?

Or perhaps we should just crown the PM.

King Steve I. I like it.

And of course, we DON'T pay for the monarchy......its free.

And how about offering an alternative?

There are some among us,

who would like us to forsake long standing, and long valued tradition and become a republic. For what? What possible advantage would we gain by becoming a republic. I can answer that. Zilch!

There are some who think that if we were a republic, our dealings with the U.S. would somehow be smoother. They wouldn't be. The U.S. will always look out for their own interests. So should we.

I agree completely.

It is strange.......the folks who trumpet republican sympathies (off with their heads ! ) seem to be the same folks who trumpethow important it is that we maintain a different character than the USA......all the while seeking to eliminate one of our greatest differences.

Strange.

I would argue that we should maintain the Crown of Canada.

I would suggest that Her Majesty the Queen of Canada has never caused harm to Canada, nor has she ever attempted to overstep her bounds as the head of state and interfere in the affairs of the elected Government of Canada. The purpose of the Crown is to be the nexus of executive power as a non-political body, and this continued to be the case as intended at Confederation.

As for the Lieutenant Governors of the Provinces and the Governors General of Canada, these people serve extremely important functions. They are a "last-ditch" check on the power of Governments—a metaphor given by one expert in particular which I find extremely appropriate and accurate, is giving these vice-regal representatives the nickname as "constitutional fire-extinguishers." We hope, of course, that their expansive powers are never needed, but it's comforting to know that they're there.

Besides, who but the Governors General and the Lieutenant Governors would promote unity and the culture of the Provinces and Canada? The Prime Minister? The Premiers? They don't have time for that. The Governor General has been spending this year travelling about the country, making beautiful speeches and working to inspire co-operation and dialogue among the different regions in Canada—is Harper doing that? No, of course not! And that's not his fault—he just wouldn't ever have the time to do those kinds of more cultural, personal things.

Besides, I like the Queen. In an age overwhelmed by the cheap, unseemly and tawdry, the old gal still goes about her business with a dignity seldom seen in 'a head of state' in the western world. I respect that. There are immense challenges facing the world over the next 25 years. I should think traditions will at times seem a blessing.

DurkaDurka, the phrasing of your question is incorrect.

Her Majesty serves as the Queen of Canada in a capacity entirely separate from the United Kingdom. If Canada saw fit (although I doubt that this would ever happen, since it would betray the preamble of the Statute of Westminster), our Parliament could change the rules of succession and the Privy Council spontaneously proclaim anyone King or Queen. We just happen to share the same person as our head of state as does the United Kingdom.

She probably never will, Queen Elizabeth has kept her posture and has never interfered. Let's assume for a moment the heir to the throne takes a different approach. I'm curious what your position will be.

I'd wait until the queen dies and then scrap the whole monarchy ****! It's an archaic stench carried from the past and I can't stand it.

Well come on now Colpy, she is very well "compensated" for performing a political balancing act and attending state functions. (I'm referring to the Brits btw)

This from a person who has a gun-firing monkey as an avatar. Not everything from the past is bad. Tradition, decency, real values, all part of our tradition, are worth saving.
