To lead Canada as the head of whatever political party, who would you choose.??

Just a discussion. You may give reasons or not as you wish.

You may cuss and argue, spit and shout, and we can go to Wreck Beach and finish it like heroes.

My choice: Bob White.

First president of the CAW, after he wrested it from the UAW.

Couldn't be bought. Tough. Good negotiator. Put the workers first.
Wouldn't cave to pressure. Mostly everyone believed he would fail and he persevered and brought in the first CAW contract. A good person and damn fine Canadian.

Ugg.

RE: IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE

Personally? Steven Harper.

The man embodies everything a Canadian leader should. He's tough on his policy, he cares about his nation, and he's not afraid to stand up and do what's right. Is he perfect? No, not by a long shot, he's flawed like every other person. However during the last century our nation was plauged with spineless leadership, which hampered this Country on the international scene. I myself, think freed of the anti-conservativism that many in this Nation should, a sort of, "it's different, I don't like it" atittude, Harper could do a lot for Canada, and a lot for the World. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Maybe we should change our election format so we could actually vote for our federal leader.

Its kinda crazy, "wheely cwazy actwooawee" *, that we don't vote for our PM, that he is chosen by the Party with the most seats [asses?]

We could create a special position for "the chosen leader", with well defined powers [including a rule that says The Leader cannot change his own rules, like GW Bush is trying and succeeding to do].

Who would I want is such a position?
Possibly - David Suzuki, until global Warming is no longer the biggest threat.

Realistically - myself,Karlin as the only one I trust to handle money

Comically - Stephan Harper

Behind the scenes at present, in fact, it is really GWBush running Canada [due to Harper's brown nosing].

The least defining point of a Republic, a democracy
is the direct vote.

Western world democracies have experimented with
all sorts of ways to elect leaders.

We've seen indirect elections and direct elections
produce the same problematic leaders in every type
of system.

I don't really like any of the available options, but I would like Harper to be around long enough for us to see what he's really made of and what he and his party can do, and give the Liberals a chance to reassemble themselves and see who they cough up to lead them. I think that may be the right metaphor...

I dread the thought of an election without credible alternatives for national leaders. That's mostly what kept Chretien around long past when he should have moved on, not any particular talent of his, and he made the same damnfool mistake Trudeau did, not allowing any credible successors to develop behind him. Some interesting parallels between what Trudeau did to Turner and Chretien did to Martin.

This is a new experience for most of Harper's caucus, and I'm inclined to give them a little slack at least for a year or two while they figure out how things work.

Well now, Damn it, Toro.. thanks for the vote of confidence!!!

I will position you in my first and most important minister post- Minister of Recreational Use of Alcohol .

I know you are all ready quite qualified, but dont let it slip over the next few weeks. Sometimes when a dark horse like SPAIN gets a head shot at a 32.5 degree angle into the remote corner of the net, one can forget to lift ones bottle to ones lips......

As your minister, I'd never forget how to lift a bottle.

Please make sure that your wife understands the importance of your position. I cant have her drinking all YOUR beer. I am sure that under some advertising clause we can supply her with her own case(s).

Robert Stanfield would have made an interesting leader. "The best PM we never had' is often used to describe him. I'd also have loved to have seen long forgotten nationalist Jack Horner as PM. The one time Tory chief hopeful switched to the Liberals and performed credibly with the party. Horner had fire. And that's seldom seen in Canadian politicians today.

Proud to be in Alberta
Back in his day, Peter Lougheed. I think Preston Manning would have been very good as well. Yeah, my picks are from the right, what did you expect?

Surprisingly, I would not pick Ralph, although I loved what he did for Alberta.

But right now, Harper is the best person, man or woman, for the job, and every day he continues to reinforce my opinion. I hope we get at least two years out of this government, because it may just open peoples eyes. Even those on the left.

Just to be fair, I also would have supported John Turner at one point in time.

Oh yeah, I forgot about him. That would be fun! Of course he would have to take a paycut to be PM, but what the hell..........
