OTTAWA (CP) - The federal government has posted a whopping $12-billion budget surplus for the fiscal year that ended March 31.

It marks the ninth consecutive federal surplus - a string that began under the former Liberal government. And it's a lot larger than the $8-billion surplus forecast by Conservative Finance Minister Jim Flaherty in his first federal budget delivered on May 2.

From April 2005 until March 2006, Ottawa took in $12 billion more in booming corporate and personal income tax revenues than was spent, according to figures released today by the Finance Department.

Some of the surplus has already been spent by the Tories, who committed $3.6 billion of it for new spending on things like defence and transportation.

The rest of the surplus - just over $8 billion - will be spent on reducing Canada's $490-billion debt.

Some tax payments are still coming in and adjustments will be made before the official surplus is announced in the fall, finance officials say.

The sizeable surplus is bound to trigger controversy as provinces demand a greater share of the federal kitty, complaining of a fiscal imbalance between the two levels of government.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper has promised to eliminate that imbalance.

SO the conservatives are just the same as the Liberals. No better. And people are still on a honeymoon with these people, who are planning to bring their own government down next year, con rumors, I just don't believe it.

RE: Conservative surplus

Harper is a stupid fucker! How could he fuck up with the surplus. If you don't know what the numbers are, don't present a budget.

Same as the Liberals. But with accountability and Harper and the COns doing long speechs that the Liberals shouldn't do such a practice underestimate, they do the exact same thing.

Absolutely.

And anyone saying it was for the last fiscal year, the Liberals were in control of the government for at least half that time. They didn't write the budget, Flarhety did therefore making the Conservative stand on this hypocrtical.

RE: Conservative surplus

Hopefully this kills some Conservative support. Their support levels are getting way too high. They could dissolve Parliament right now, call an election, and win a majority government.

RE: Conservative surplus

What's wrong with a bigger surplus? Pay down some of that debt. Of course it is hypocritical that Harper criticized the liberals for doing the same, but what else is new?

There is nothing wrong with it. However, when you go on daily and say the Liberals are somehow bad for deceiving the people with a bigger surplus then expected. You don't go out and deceived the public with a bigger surplus then expected.

Re: Conservative Hypocrisy

 My Opinion Re: Surpluses

I don't think that a surplus can be deemed a surplus, unless one does not have a debt. At this time, I think that "surpluses", as they are deemed, should be encouraged, produced, and used to reduce the debt in an aggressive manner — our debt requires that our Government of Canada appropriate somewhere in the area of one-sixth of its budget toward negating the interest on the debt, and if we adopt an aggressive strategy to reduce this debt, then our Government would have more useable income in the long run.

 My Opinion Re: Hypocrisy of This Government

When the Conservative Party of Canada was acting as Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition to the previous Government of Canada, the Government was bashed for inaccurate approximations of what the surpluses would be — furthermore, the Opposition slammed the Government for having a surplus, period, contending that a surplus should never be accrued, since this would be tantamount to "overtaxing". Cue our new Conservative Government, now with a surplus of around four billion dollars higher than their calculations led us to believe — and on top of that, they are using the surplus for program funds appropriation.

Now, I support large surpluses to pay off the debt — however, the Conservative Party opposed surpluses entirely during their time on the Opposition side of the House of Commons. This situation is just another example of how the Conservatives are acting in contempt of the people of Canada now that they have the force of the Crown of Canada behind them.

The hypocrisy is deafening.

How much interest is added to our national debt every year?

RE: Interest on the Debt

During the previous fiscal year, 34.1 billion dollars (+CA$34 100 000 000) of interest was accrued; in order to "neutralize" the interest, the previous budget from the Government of Canada had to use seventeen cents out of every dollar of revenue (that's almost one-fifth) to negate the interest.

Get out of here! Tell me you're joking! If I knew that so much interest was going on our national debt, I would of said put our entire surplus on the debt. Man, the stuff the news doesn't tell you. But we have FiveParadox, the human encyclopedia.

Good Lord!

You guys are just ridiculous!

First the Tories were going to bankrupt us all.

Now they are liars.........

On March 31, the Conservative government had been in power for less than SIXTY DAYS!

Give them a break! They probably had NO IDEA what the surplus would be.

Geezus!
