Today, Michael Eizenga, the President of the Liberal Party of Canada, announced that the party has established a Renewal Commission, to engage supporters of the party around the country and renew the party in preparation for the upcoming leadership convention and, ultimately, the Fortieth General Election.

The Commission is to be comprised of thirty-two taskforces, each to be comprised of Senators, Members of Parliament, independent experts, and other members of the party. Each taskforce is to be supervised by a five-person committee, to be comprised of Mr. Eizenga, Tom Axworthy, Bobbi Éthier — the President of the Liberal Party of Canada (Manitoba), the Honourable Lucienne Robillard, P.C., M.P. — the Member for Westmount—Ville-Marie and Deputy Leader of Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition, and Marva Wisdom.

Michael Eizenga[/color]]"I am tremendously excited about the process of growth and renewal our party is undertaking. This is an exhilarating time for Liberals and Canada as a whole," said Mr. Eizenga.

...

"The goal of this renewal process is to reach out to activists, academics, party members, opinion leaders and Canadians across the country. This is especially important as we are faced with a leadership contest and need to be election-ready within a very short time period," Mr. Eizenga added.

It sure can't hurt.

The Liberals need a few years in the political wilderness to sort themselves out.

If they can concentrate on establishing a foundation of principles, as opposed to just a lust for power, as their reason d'etre, they might become a worthwhile force in Canadian politics, instead of just a force.
