The Right Honourable Stephen Harper, P.C., M.P., the Member for Calgary Southwest and Prime Minister of Canada, today made a speech to the St. John's Board of Trade, in relation to his belief that the citizens of Canada need major relief in terms of their taxes — to that end, the Prime Minister highlighted some of the ideas that his Government of Canada is going to be pushing forward in the House of Commons:
  • the Government of Canada would provide up to five hundred dollars (CAD$500.00) to parents or students per year for the purpose of purchasing textbooks required for their education;¹
  • persons entering "economically vital trades" would be eligible to receive up to five hundred dollars (CAD$500.00) per year, in a new Tools Tax Deduction to be introduced by this Government;
  • families could receive up to five hundred dollars (CAD$500.00) per child, per year, where their children are registered in and participating in recognized sporting activities;
  • fishing property transferred within a family, up to five hundred thousand dollars (CAD$500 000.00), would be exempt from capital gains tax — a move which, in the opinion of the Prime Minister, would be of particular interest to citizens of the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
These things sound good in principle, but I am starting to become quite apprehensive as to how the next budget is going to go over — the Government is going to need to make serious cuts to other programs and endeavours in order to account for the funds they would require to make these cuts, in addition to their other promises. Is our Government going to take our budget into the red?

The Conservatives putting us in the red is something I've been worrying about. They did it the last time they were in.

Well, the money for books will certainly help but, I don't want it at the sake of destroying all the progress we've made over the last decade.

500 dollars, 500 dollars, 500 dollars. What does that do for the real world economy when fees are more than 500 dollars. And is that 500 dollars per kid or just for each family.

And the money for the books isn't that much. Or for the sports, it costs about 150+ for admission and another 200+ for uniforms and other equipment fees.

The conservatives won't be around long enough to cause any real harm to our civilization. They are in power because people were angry with someone else, being Paul Martin and the Liberals.
Harper is already setting the stage of his own distruction. He is still ahead in the poles however that will fade with time and time is not on the Tories side.

I haven't been following this too closely as I live in the states now. But just make sure that the right wing types don't fall into the tax cut mantra that has hurt the US so much. Cutting taxes sounds nice but not at the cost of driving up the deficit and hurting the country.

Has any one else noticed that when taxes are cut we the little people never see a change in our take-home-pay, or what we purchase? It cost millions to the Government to give tax cuts but who really sees the difference in actual dollars. I never have, has anyone else?
