Daryl Kramp, M.P., the Member for Prince Edward—Hastings, tabled before the House of Commons on April 6, 2006, Bill C-201, An Act respecting a National Appreciation Day (or, as per Section 1, the National Appreciation Day Act). This Act, if passed by both the House of Commons and the Senate, and if assented to by the Governor General of Canada, would make the third day of each March a day to commemorate and celebrate the contributions that the Canadian Forces and emergency response personnel make to Canada every day.

The Web site for the [color=#5588ff said:
Library of Parliament[/color]]WHEREAS members of the Canadian Forces and emergency response professionals, including police officers, firefighters and paramedics, risk their lives every day to rescue, protect and care for people in Canada and throughout the world;

...

2. Throughout Canada, in each and every year, the third day of March shall be known as "National Appreciation Day" in recognition of the contribution to society made by members of the Canadian Forces and emergency response professionals, including police officers, firefighters and paramedics.

3. For greater certainty, National Appreciation Day is not a legal holiday or a non-juridical day.

I don't believe we should celebrate Militancy, indeed days like Nov 11th lose their meaning. No, Rememberance day is the day we remember what the brave soldurers in any war our conflic have done and also lets us know the heavy price of war and revolution. So I'd be against it myself. Not because I don't support our military men but because I support those who have fought and died for us in the past so that they believed we would never have to fight again. Novemeber 11th!

Edited: for spelling... blah... and thanks thought I'd get flamed for what I said.

I tend to agree with Finder. I'm both sad, and proud of the sacrifices made by our young people in uniform, but I grieve for the fallen on November eleventh. Let's hope that that one day continues to be enough.

Hear! Hear! Well put.

In any case what a silly name for a holiday, National Aprreciation day, how does one know what one is suppose to be appreciating?
I think we could find far better occasions to mark such as; making St. Jean Baptiste day a national holiday or having a day to honour the institution of responsible government or All Saints Day Nov.1(I don't know about you but I'm always hung over after Hallowe'en) etc..

Agreed November 11 is the day to remember military costs for protecting Canadian freedoms in U.N peacekeeping, the world wars, Afghanistan, Korea and other operations.

We don't need another day to appreciate the military. It would defeat the purpose of Nov 11.

"National Appreciation Day"

Sounds like a nice national socialist name for a holiday.

The guys name is in blue, so it appears he is one of those conservative fanatics who want people to full-headedly get behind the military in some kind of Mccarthy style.

RE: National Appreciation

Only if its a stat holiday...in fact, i propose my own ammendment. I want every other Friday off as a stat holiday cuz i need a break from work. So not only should we honour our military, but lets take it futher. We need a day to honour all Prime Ministers, the Mighty Beaver Appreciation Day, The Blue Rodeo Appreciation Day, etc etc. I just want more stat holidays. :p

Semperfi_dani, as per Section 2 of Bill C-201, no, National Appreciation Day would not be a non-juridical day or statutory holiday (at least if the bill were passed in its current form).
