Speaker of the Commons Re-elected!

Today, in response to a proclaimation from Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, C.C., C.M.M., C.O.M., C.D., the Governor General of Canada, in the name of Her Majesty Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada, the Members of the House of Commons assembled for the Thirty-ninth Parliament of Canada.

After their presence in the Red Chamber was requested by the Governor General, through the Usher of the Black Rod, the Members assembled in the Upper Chamber, only to be informed by the Honourable Noël Kinsella, the Speaker of the Senate, that Her Excellency did not see fit to reveal the causes of summoning Parliament until the Members had elected a Speaker to represent them.

Thus, the Members returned to the House of Commons — and the election process began. After a long time of casting votes and counting ballots, it was revealed that the House of Commons had come to its decision — the Honourable Peter Milliken, M.P., the Members for Kingston and the Islands, had been re-elected to take up the Speakership of the House of Commons. It is quite rare that a Speaker is elected from an opposition party.

What do you think this next session is going to hold, and do you think that Mr. Milliken is going to make a good Speaker? Do you think he was a good Speaker during the Thirty-eighth Parliament? Is it a good thing, or a bad thing that the Speaker was not elected from among the Members of the Government of Canada?

Hey I don't see a problem with this. As the house has been voting on the specker for awhile now many thought a Liberal would be chosen anyways since in effect this does take away a vote from the liberals, but does give the liberals the tie brecker if one is to happen. HOWEVER the speaker of the house wouldn't be bound to vote against the government, xp if there was an election called you could finger the person who caused the downfall of the last government.

Should make for an interesting government. I'm sure the NDP, Liberals and more then enough bloq heads voted for the liberal speaker.

The three main contenders were from the Liberal Party of Canada — no member of the Conservative Party of Canada, the New Democratic Party of Canada, nor the Bloc Québecois made any serious effort.
